Hello all.
I’m 10 days post chemo 1 and already worrying about the headaches I got this time round.
I used the cold cap and managed throughout much better than expected however the migraine I got from day 3-7 was horrendous. I don’t normally suffer from them and it totally wiped me out. I did get some nasal sprays from the GP in the end that cleared it up over a day or 2 but not sure I could get these each time?
I really don’t want to give up on the cold cap and still experience the migraine again but also if it is the cold cap then I’ll happily not use it again.
I have a 3 and 5 year old and so preserving my hair is mainly to keep life as “normal” as possible for them not me.
Help please!
Hmmmm! May not be the cold cap, have you got filgastrim (GSF) injections to boost your immune system that you inject yourself at home? I suffered with awful headaches caused by those? Usually starting day 4/5 for me but we’re all different? Regards the gp meds, yes you should be able to get them each time, definitely speak to your gp about having them at home x
After my first 'cold cap' chemo, The nurse advised me to take 2 paracetamol before each session to try to stave off any headaches etc. I did this and managed to use cold cap throughout my chemo. It pqrtially saved my hair but 2 weeks after finishing chemo, it's gone so thin that I almost have no hair left... someone else I was talking yo told me they had the same experience! Good luck!
Yes I thought it might be them but when I called the unit they said not. The times are about the same when I got them so that would make sense. Did you get the headaches every time? if I don’t lose any hair before my next cycle I may try again then. Thankyou x
I don’t know why they told you it definitely wasn’t cause it’s well acknowledged on my unit and anecdotally here that they cause bone aches and headaches!
I had 7 injections a cycle, I reduced it to 5 a cycle which helped and my blood bend up, some have reduced further to 3 a cycle, it dies depend how your blood holds up though xx
Hi HattieRose, I used the cold cap during all 8 of my chemo sessions and took a couple of paracetamol beforehand (agreed by the nurses) but never experienced severe headaches. As this has occurred 3 days after you wore the cold cap and coincides with you taking filgastrim I would agree with Anna12345 that this may well be down to the filgastrim as headaches are a known side effect. I had to have the injections for my last 5 chemo sessions and did experience some headaches then, although make sure that you are drinking lots of fluid before and after chemo as I found that getting dehydrated caused headaches too. During chemo it can get tricky to work out what might be causing a side effect as all sorts are going on but keeping a record of exactly what the side effect is and when it occurred can help to narrow down the cause.
I had thick hair to start with and the cold cap worked well, plus it helps with hair regrowth afterwards, but you will still lose some of your hair but this doesn't mean that it isn't working. I lost a lot of hair after my second chemo session but stuck with it and I'm glad that I did as although my hair thinned out a lot (by about 50 / 60%) I had no bald patches and still had a fairly decent head of hair, which is now growing back really well. Good luck with the rest of your treatment, and hopefully if you do get another migraine you will have medication already in place to help.
