Hi, I am new to this group. I had a lumpectomy and lymph node removal on 22nd December 2021. 5 weeks later I am still awaiting my results I am going out of my mind with worry because of the delay. Does anyone know if certain cancer patients get priority on their tests. I know of a lady at my hospital who had her op after me and is starting chemo this week. I am in limbo and totally stressed out.
So sorry to read this. Have you had any post op checks with or been in touch with your breast cancer nurse or breast centre/clinic? They might be able to explain why there has been a delay. I had to go back in a few days after the surgery for a check for fluid build up in the cavity and have it drawn off. The nurses are brilliant and keep you updated on progress of lab reports or could find out for you the cause of the delay.
One positive could be is that if there was any particularly nasty news, they will have called you back very quickly.
Hope you get some answers on Monday.
Take care and sending comfort ,
Kathryn
When you're going through hell, don't stop!
Hi - I had my surgery mid Nov & waited 5 weeks for my results. Unfortunately I think it varies greatly depending on which hospital you are at. Your results will usually be discussed at a multidisciplinary team meeting (MDT) so that various doctors agree the best treatment for you prior to you being told. Often these are only held once a week. My lab also had a backlog of samples I was told.
The waiting is absolutely agonising & you will probably be presuming the worst (I know I did). I was very lucky & had clear margins & clear lymph nodes so no chemo required. I had to wait from finding out on 22nd Dec until yesterday to start my radiotherapy & it seemed like forever.
I would suggest you phone your BC nurse or secretary of the consultant & ask for an idea of where in the system you are. My nurse was able to give me the lymph biopsy results prior to the MDT & that gave me some relief. As someone who has worked in the NHS for over 30 years my advice is to chase things up yourself. I know it can be hard to do it but on the whole if you explain how anxious you are people will try to help.
Once you know your treatment plan it does get a bit easier to cope with. Good luck & stay strong.
Hi
I had my surgery on 8 December. I was given an appointment of 22/12 for my results but was told a few days before that it would be in the New Year due to a backlog plus I dont think Christmas helped.
I was on the phone to the breast clinic on 3 January to chase my results and to be fair they squeezed me in to see the consultant on 4 January but I had to wait until the end of clinic.
As cs82 says i would phone your bcn or your consultants secretary. straight away.
I had a fraught Christmas so understand exactly where you are coming from.
Best wishes and good luck x
