Hi there, recently turned 50, had my first mammogram in December, after a call-back and lots more tests, biopsies, etc, got a DCIS diagnosis this morning. Have to have a mastectomy and feeling kind of terrified... also somehow need to decide on whether to have an implant...

On the plus side, feeling incredibly lucky in the care and respect I've been shown by the wonderful team at Bart's, so there's that!

Anyway, much love to all of you making this forum happen. Going offline for the rest of the day as need to step away from the google storm of mastectomy info for a bit, but will check in again soon!

x

  • Welcome, and sorry for your diagnosis.  Dr Google can be frightening. I was advised early to stay from it, and only get my information from trusted sources like NHS, Breast Clinic at the hospital, Macmillan and Maggies. It saved me from many more sleepless nights.

I'm sure others with same/similar diagnoses will be better able to support you than I can,  but this is a safe place to ask/discuss any concerns you may have.

"Take care of you", was the other gem that keeps coming back at me. It's hard when you're a wife and mother though some days.

Will chat soon. In the meantime, sending best wishes,

    Kathryn x.

When you're going through hell, don't stop!

  • Hi. I was diagnosed in September with DCIS.  Had a lumpectomy in October.  Went for results and was told I needed a single mastectomy which I had in November.  I was told I'd have to wait 12 months before I have reconstructive surgery.  I've got a softie prosthesis and waiting for appointment for my silicone prosthesis.  I'm feeling a bit down about my appearance but apart from that everything is healing well.  Here if you need to chat. Xxx

Thanks so much for reaching out to me. Glad you're healing well. I understand what you mean - deep down I'm terrified about the mastectomy, but trying to manage it... had to work through a lot of body issues over the years so hoping to draw strength from that, although I know it will be hard. Let's support each other! xxx

  • Youre welcome.  Yes let's support each other.  I'd like that. X

  • Hello, Im 55 and was diagnosed with DCIS in October. Due to it being 7cm and also 1mm invasive I had a mastectomy in November, in London. Also had immediate diep flap reconstruction. That is where they take tummy fat, skin and blood vessel to make a new boob. It went really well and I’m so pleased with result.

Pathology from mastectomy was that no lymph involvement and also previous biopsies had removed all invasiveness, so no further treatment needed.

if you have any questions re the mastectomy I’d be pleased to help.

That must have been such good news to hear.  Im really pleased for you.

  • glad your are healing well and sorry you are feeling down. You are entitled to as you have been through a huge change. I was diagnosed in November with DCIS. Had lumpectomy on 17th January. Haven’t got my surgery results appointment until 7th Feb. Seems so long to wait. Hope you don’t mind asking but did they not know you needed a mastectomy until they did the lumpectomy? I had assumed because they made a decision to do lumpectomy they had decided against a mastectomy. I had assumed this was the case with me but reading your experience I am now wondering what news I might get at my follow up

Thank you for sharing to us as all information of peoples experiences help

    best wishes x

    1. Hi sorry for your diagnosis. As others have said please stay away from. Google as much as possible the only times I had wobbles was after doing too much internet searching.l will share my experiencewith you as I found it helpfulreading what others have been through to get an accurate accountof what to expect. I'm 43 and was diagnosed with dcis in November, had surgery in December and was given 3 options to choose from mastectomy, diep reconstruction or therapeutic mammoplasy which is what I opted for where they removed 8x5cm. The actual operation was fine the guided wire being inserted prior was a bit unpleasant and I did pass out but nothing that couldn't be dealt with. They discovered some had become invasive so I've just been back in and 4 nymph lodes removed and am awaiting results.  Everyone said this was unpleasant and painful but honestly wasnt at all, i think having the radio dye inserted was no worse than the covid jab. I'm having problems with the cuts healing fully because of the type of cuts vertical meeting horizontal. The staff have all been wonderful and I'm very luck to have a brilliant surgeon (1st one I was assigned was awful and I requested a change) I'm now awaiting results and next treatment plan. Throughout all of this I've had no pain killers I do have a high pain threshold though. I found a feather squisy pillow was very useful after surgery as it gently could be held under arm and around boob would mould to you and support whilst sitting watching TV. Good luck and try not to worry X
  • They did the lumpectomy as I'd had biopsies done due to calcification in my boob. They thought the lumpectomy would be enough but sadly this wasn't the case, it was a bigger area so I had to have a single mastectomy.  Bit of a shock as we were expecting them to suggest chemo or radiotherapy. I've been calm throughout the whole thing. I have a really bad family history of breast cancer.  They also removed lymph nodes as a precaution. Hopefully you will not have the same results as me. Xxxx
