I was diagnosed in December 2021 with a new local recurrence of breast cancer, 9.5 years after I first had breast cancer. The lumps are in my lymph nodes near where my original lump was. I had thought had all lymph nodes had been cleared when I was first treated (I had a double mastectomy and a lymph node (axillary) clearance in 2013) but apparently some were left behind, and they are now cancerous. Apparently it is triple negative again, like last time. After the inital shock, I felt I was doing quite well, but the wait for an operation to remove them...which is not till 27th Jan...is taking forever, and the lumps are definitley growing while I'm waiting, which is making me feel quite scared. I have been told to prepare myself that I'm likely to need chemo again after the surgery, and also probably radiotherapy. I had thought I was in the clear after such a long time since my previous experience with cancer :(

  • So sorry you find yourself in this position.  Such a blow after a long time clear.  Hopefully this next lot of treatment will see you good for another 10 years at least xx

  • Let's hope so. I'm still only 43 DisappointedLast time I had treatment I had a baby under the age of 1, so he had no idea anything was wrong as he was too small. He is now 10, so I worry how he will deal with seeing me go through treatment this time

Sorry to hear about your recurrence.

    I'm going through this for the first time at 44 with 4 kids (4, 6, 11 & 13)

We waited until we had a surgery date then told them all and what was expected to happen. We also took the approach of informing the schools so if it got too much for them there were measures in place to support them.

Kids are surprisingly resilient. The one I thought would be grossed out by drain turns out it doesn't bother him. And the 6 year old took what daddy said that they are cutting my boob off. We take a pragmatic positive approach.

    Xx

  • We only have the one child, 13yo who we've also been open with from day 1. His school has been amazingly supportive to him, and checking in with us every so often too.

We're coping well enough. I'm about to start chemo next week, so we'll see what next week brings. Onwards and upwards Hugging.

When you're going through hell, don't stop!
