Hi I'm not really sure what I should be saying.

Here goes I've just been diagnosed with breast cancer I had my operation just before Christmas. (lympnodes removed and lump) I went for my results yesterday at the hospital and doctor said I have to have radiotherapy once my wounds are healed from the operation. Not sure when that will be now awaiting for someone to call me to explain things about the treatment.

  • Hi SamF. Have you been told what type of breast cancer it is, what grade and what stage? You are within your right to receive, or not receive, any information about your breast cancer according to your own preferences.

Did they say when you should expect that phone call to come in?

  • Hi SamF

Welcome to the forum and sorry you have been diagnosed with breast can.  It can take from 4 to 6 weeks after your operation to get an appointment to see a radiology oncologist.  They give you that time so that your wound can heal before you start radiotherapy.

Wishing you the best of luck with your radiotherapy when it starts.

Hi, I've just had massectomy, and been told can't hav radiotherapy, and no reconstruction, because of underlying conditions, so where does this leave me. Anyone can answer please. What am I supposed to do. X

  • Hello artificial. What are they offering you in terms of systemic treatment? Is chemotherapy an option for you?

Regarding the mastectomy, is there an option for reconstruction in the future should the underlying conditions allow or is this door closed forever?

Hi thank you for your reply at least I won't be waiting by the phone everyday for them to call me. The doctor herself should have mentioned this to me like I mentioned the doctor was in such a rush she really didn't give me a chance even to ask questions. I'm hoping my named nurse will call me soon so I can at least ask her. Thanks again

  • Hi SamF

I had an early 8mm screening detected IDC. I had surgery on 7th December and at my results appointment on 23rd Dec was given prescription for Anastrozole ( my BC was hormone driven) and calcium tablets and told radiotherapy was recommended also to reduce recurrance risk. I then had the oncology appointment on 4th Jan where I signed consent for 5 sessions of radiotherapy and have just had the planning appointment/ scan today. I've come away with dates for a PCR test ( on my birthday !!) then the 5 sessions starting 1st Feb finishing on Monday 7th

Hope that helps give an indication of potential timeline xx

Hi, greycats,  thanks for responding. They have told me nothing. Apart from masectomy, and lymphs ,no radio therapy and no reconstruction. So worried when I go back, he says it again. Then what is going to happen, not mentioned chemo. But realised on this site, and friends I know had to be radiotherapy. Concerning me, have not been put on any medication yet . Op was 5th so just waiting to hear my diagnosis. Also picked up lots had an MRI scan but I didn't. So no idea what is going to happen. My nurse is not supportive. I find this site helpful. Thank you x

  • I had a single mastectomy on 22nd November.  No need for meds, chemo or radiotherapy.  Gotta wait 12 months for my reconstruction.  Apart from that everything is OK. Scar still a little tender and underarm. Got told today to rub anti- inflammatory cream into it. Just waiting for my silicon prosthesis fitting now. Xx

  • Hello again artificial. Sounds like you are going to have to push for information. On assumption of no data whatsoever, I would go with the following:

    1.   Why can I not have a reconstruction?

    2.   Is there a chance I might be able to have one in future if my background health condition change?

    3.   Why can I not have radiotherapy?

    4.   What are my treatment options?

    5.   What happens if I have no treatment other than the surgery that I'd already had?

I would also ask the following, if they have not yet told you:

    6.   What type of breast cancer do I have?

    7.   At what stage is my cancer?

    8.   What grade is it?

The answers to the last three questions would help if you decide to try and gather information outside of what your team tells you.

Is there an option to ask to have a different nurse assigned to you?
