Was told after first biopsy I was all clear. Then got the bombshell yesterday. Surgery booked for 19th Jan. Several appointments prior.
can anyone share their experience with me please for awareness and supportPray

  • Hi otis

You're in shock. Everything is your first. I can empathise.

Before my diagnosis I barely stepped into a hospital.

I was diagnosed 1 Oct. Op 9 Nov. The various appointments, scans was a whirlwind and I could not understand the whole new level of stress anxiety emotions and I still don't. But we have each other for support to make sense of it all. Rely on your medical team.

What op are you having? I had right mastectomy.

You will see by the time you get to op, as u come to terms with the pathology report...you will feel better as you're on the path to getting better.

  • Hi

I had DCIS in LHS and invasive cancer in RHS so lumpectomy LHS and mastectomy RHS (see my profile page for all the details). Not sure what you’re due to have but as someone who had both the lumpectomy was very straightforward, and maybe as I was having the mx at the same time I never noticed it once (though the wire put in for the wide local excision was a bit painful & annoying).  The mx was very bearable, I was more uncomfortable than in pain and it was done very tidily, in and out of hospital same day. I had nerves cut so lost feeling (some returned since) in upper arm - check so you’re aware if they’re doing this as I wasn’t told till afterwards.

I recovered really well, despite a seroma and an infection, the former went by itself and the latter was obliterated by antibiotics. It’s really important to do the prescribed exercises, get a good support bra and wear your softy and I now have full range of movement.

As you can see from others stories generally people are fine after these ops and I believe its those that approach with a positive attitude and who are healthy before and after who have the best recoveries - mentally & physically.

    Good luck X

My secret? Being daft & staying positive.
  • I know that feeling. I had a lumpectomy 2 weeks ago, went to clinic expecting chemo plan and was told there are extensive microscopic lesions and I have mastectomy booked for 5th January. Let the shock wash over you and weep for a bit then ready yourself without despair for what comes next. Talk to your breast care nurses.  This is still a very recoverable cancer thousands of women survive to tell the tale and support you.

  • I'm 6 years post diagnosis for DCIS,  I had 11mm high grade removed via wire  guided lumpectomy aka Wide local excision.  I had very fine wire inserted via local in one hospital- I didn't find this painful at all, if anything less painful than stereotactic biopsy I had at one stop clinic.  Then drove to second hospital for general surgery,  went to theatre at 3pm, home eating soup by 8pm.  I was lucky and did not require any painkillers after surgery.  Then had 15 sessions of radiotherapy.  No chemo or hormone tablets just annual mammograms.
