Hi Everyone, Just recently diagnosed, what a rollercoaster of emotions.I got my biopsy results on the 10th. I have invasive ductal grade 2 cancer with lobular features which is ecadherin mix and it is er 8/8 plus intermediate grade DCIS malignant. I have no idea what any of that means, I was sent for an MRI scan last week and get my results from that this Wednesday and treatment plan. It’s the waiting around that’s doing my head in. Any ideas what any of the jargon means. I know I will probably have a lumpectomy or mastectomy, will find out Wednesday.

Thanks everyone xx

  • Hi

Its all a complete whirl isn’t it when you are first diagnosed ? You seem to have a mixture of different types of breast cancer and the MRI should be able to make sure they haven’t missed anything , and this will then inform them for your treatment plan. If they think they can do a lumpectomy they will generally advise that , otherwise a mastectomy (with or without reconstruction). Invasive ductal (idc) is the most common type , yours is mixed in with lobular which isn’t as common ( but not rare) DCIS is stage 0 cancer or pre-cancer, but they don’t know which of these types will go on to become full blown IDC or which won’t , so treatment is usually as other types. Grade2 is the middle grade , not as aggressive as a 3 , but not as weak as a 1.The 8/8 for ER is an oestrogen marker and shows your cancer is highly receptive to hormone treatments.
Once you have had your MRI results and your surgeon has advised which surgery , and you have had that and the cancer is removed they will have a full pathology , and things do sometimes change , so my advice is to not think too far ahead , get Wednesday out of the way and see what the surgeon has to say.

Come back on here and let everyone know how you are getting on , and if you edit your profile you can add in your own details and that makes it easier when people reply as they can see where you are in your treatment plan.

Very good luck , and hopefully Wednesywi make things a bit clearer.

  • Hi Jo, thanks so much for replying and helping me to understand the jargon, I really appreciate it. Knowing what it all means really has helped. I will be in touch when I get results on Wednesday and I will also do my profile.
    Thanks again

  • Sorry I hadn’t replied earlier. I went to my appointment yesterday and they picked something else up on my MRI on the other breast, so had to have an ultrasound and more biopsies taken. The doctor who did the ultrasound doesn’t think it’s anything sinister but they have to check it out to follow up the MRI. I’ll get my results and treatment plan on 31st. I’m a little disappointed that I haven’t got my treatment plan but I’m trying to stay positive.

    Thanks Dee x

  • I know how you feel, just want to know the next steps so we can get in with it.  Take comfort in that they are looking at everything thoroughly-my treatment got a bit more complicated as I found a cancerous area in the opposite breast a month after my original IDC was treated with surgery, radiotherapy and hormone inhibitors.  Good luck with everything and hope you manage to have a good Xmas xxx
