Hi. Diagnosed last week and there's so much to take in and  digest.

DCIS with microinvasion and have surgery scheduled for 14th January (day after my birthday!). Really worried about the wire insertion as I know it's just under local anaesthetic and then have a few hours with it sticking out of me before I have the lumpectomy in the afternoon. Scared I'll catch the wire whilst changing into the surgical gown and really scared it's going to be painful. The surgery itself doesn't really worry me as I'll be under general anaesthetic and won't know anything about it.

I'm so worried about the wire insertion that I'm considering opting for the mastectomy as then I won't need the wire put in at all. I'm far from a wuss having had thyroid and bladder cancer in the past and have had over 30 operations, but for some reason, this petrifies me.

Any words of wisdom or encouragement would be much appreciated right now.

  • You won't feel the wire, or see it or catch it, the amazing NHS will make sure of it, so please don't change your treatment plan because of this.  Love from Ann

  • Totally agree with  you won’t feel it. I was already in my surgical gown by the time mine was inserted. It will be taped down so it won’t catch.

  • The sure insertion is less painful than biopsy.  I had mine inserted in one hospital then drove 10 miles to  neighbouring hospital,  the wire was hidden under tape.  My wire inserted on top of left breast so I had to lie face down on bed with breast hanging through hole and the jacked table up like a car and worked underneath.  Made me laugh.
