Breast Cancer

Hi, My brother and I are carers to our 89 year old mother who was diagnosed with Breast Cancer 6 months ago, stage 4 aggressive.

Mum also has other medical conditions which could stop her from having the breast removed.  Mum’s next appointment is 3 months when the option of having the breast removed will possibly not be an option.  Mum is very confused and has lots of questions which we don’t feel we have the answers to.  Would it be possible for a MacMillan nurse to call on mum to talk to her, is this something they could help us with.

    Hi

I am not a nurse, just a recent cancer patient.

    1. appointment in 3 months sounds a long time away - does seem to need chasing
    2. in my health board I got given a number to call to talk to a cancer nurse at any time, with a 24hr response time.  I mention this as there may be a card given to your mum that’s just a bit lost in paper work

I am sure there is lots of guidance on here too but sorry I don’t know how to direct on that as new myself, but definitely chase chase chase x x

big hugs and best of luck to you and your family x

  • Hi, mum has a nurse that we call to chat to at the hospital and has been very helpful over the past 6 months but mum has a hearing problem and doesn’t like talking on the telephone and is certainly a lot weaker now than 6 months ago.  I will call her but just wondered if a MacMillan nurse could visit her as I know her cancer nurse at the hospital do not offer this service

thank you for your advice and i wish you a healthy 2022

  • Try ringing the MacMillan number on this website and hopefully they can advise.

I do know that my grandmother who had breast cancer at 70 & 74 (radical mastectomy) had cancer again age 88 but was offered only palliative  treatment because of her age and they said the treatment would be more harmful to her and generally cancer slower growing in older patients.  This was in 1988.  My gran passed in 1990 through heart failure.

  • Thank you

    i will call today
