MRI - how long to wait for the results

This afternoon I had an MRI following a diagnosis of invasive lobular carcinoma on 12.10.21. I was told by the Radiologist that it would most probably be 2 weeks before my consultant got the results. I wondered if anyone else here had had an MRI as part of their diagnostic work-up and if so how long they had to wait for the results. When I was given my diagnosis of ILC I was told that if I hadn’t needed the MRI the surgical team would have contacted me within 48 hours! It now looks as though I will have had to wait at least a month before the surgical team are in touch and I am find the waiting and not knowing very difficult.  Has anyone else been in this situation and if so, did you  chase up the MRI results? Any thoughts or comments gratefully received.

  • I had one as part of my diagnostics. It was 2 weeks to the day before my consultant appointment (which was brought forward). Four days later I had surgery.

  • Thanks for letting me know Angua1. Do you mind telling me why your consultant appointment was bought forward? Your surgery was done very quickly after your appointment, was this what you were expecting? Ros.

  • Hi have you got a BCN, I had my MRI after my lumpectomy as that’s when they found out I had lobular cancer and not ductal, I phoned her up just under 2 weeks later as I was having more surgery and wanted to know the results beforehand as I didn’t want to be told after that I needed more surgery. She gave them to me over the phone.

Your appointment may be brought forward when they get your results.

  • Hi Di54. I was given a number for the breast care nurses but haven’t been given one specifically because I haven’t seen anyone apart from the radiologist in the breast screening unit. I was told there would be a delay in seeing the surgeon because of having to have the MRI but I suppose I am a little surprised that it seems to be taking this long. I realise that my expectations may be too high. It’s difficult because I just don’t know what to expect- nothing very concrete was said about timings. I will try ringing the number I have been given and see if they can shed any light on the matter.

  • No problem, they were putting extra clinics in. I was worried it was a more sinister reason but was assured not. It was a different consultant to the one I initially saw.  I had some appointments at one hospital in the trust and others at another - wherever they could fit me. CT scan was in a portacabin in the car park!

  • Hi I had an MRi scan on a Monday and consultant had the report with her for my clinic appt on the Thursday xx

  • That sounds really rapid and so good that you were able to see the consultant so quickly. All the best.

  • They booked me in to see my surgeon at the same time as they booked my MRI scan - so I got my results when I saw the surgeon a week after the MRI. I think I was extremely lucky with my care - every single scan I went for had a follow up appointment already booked a week later and I always new exactly what was coming up and when. If I needed another scan, it was scheduled in when I still there, along with the follow up appointment.

I really feel for people who have no idea when they're going to get their results. It is so hard waiting for them that not knowing when you'll get them just seems like an added cruelty to me.

I wish there was something to say that would make the waiting easier, but it is just something that we all have to get through. Unfortunately, some areas seem to be worse for waiting times than others. I'm in Scotland.

  • What a brilliant system, so sensible and cuts out all the not knowing. I wish my hospital did this but it doesn’t appear to do so. I talked with a Macmillan nurse yesterday and I am going to chase things up on Monday and see what the plan is. As you say, it’s the waiting and not knowing that is so difficult but I do appreciate that so many of us are having to go through this and there simply isn’t an easy answer.  Perhaps I will. I’ve to Scotland!

  • Sorry that should have read, perhaps I will move to Scotland!
