Recently diagnosed with breast cancer. Had surgery last week. How does once cope with the after affects?
I think it affects everyone differently but like Rhiwbina it also took me until last week to feel normal (I almost forget I've even had the op now and it was a couple of months ago). It was grotty to begin with, but the painkillers helped a lot. I had expected to be really sleepy after my op, but only slept 2½hrs that first night. I did nap during the day in my first four weeks. The worst bit for me was actually the pain as a result of the intubation (tube they use to help you breath when under the anaesthetic). I found chamomile tea with a lot of honey helped considerably. That took about a fortnight to go away.
Wishing you the very best with your recovery. X
Thank you both. just trying to manage my own expectations. Week one after mastectomy and just tired all the time and taking lots of pain relief. Doing the exercises every day though. I’ll keep going
Hello Pink heart,
Yes keep taking the painkillers once the scar has sealed I found a bath helpful but that was about 3 week after surgery. It was lovely to have my drains out but that's when my Seroma started and I still have it so although, drains are not pleasent , and get in the way don't rush them out. I have cording too it's not really painful but needs constant streaching and physio need to ping off the cords . This happens weekly. I'm ok with my appearance just want the Seroma to go . But all in all I'm doing ok and thankful the surgery is over , I'm awake a lot in the night but that's just apprehension about my first chemotherapy sessions due to start soon . Hopefully you won't need any
Take care X

Thank you. Getting my results from the op latter part of this week. Took biopsy of lymph nodes to check if these are cancerous or not. Fills me with fear if I need these removed too. Hear bio-oil or E45 is good to apply once dressings are off.
Good your results are due soon . Yes not pleasent to have more surgery , mine came out at the same time as my bilateral mastectomy which I was thankful for. I don't know about you but I never really understood the difficult path this is once you are diagnosed with cancer. I now understand that
we need to give one year to this from diagnosis to full recovery . We are much better after about 2 months from surgery physically but mentally well that's a different story
Take care and take your time X
