Hi,

I started out with some breast pain & a raised vein in my boob at the beginning of September. I kept an eye on it by checking my boobs regularly. Because my period was due I thought it could be that. It settled down a little but on the 11th I noticed a large hard lump near my nipple. I got to see the dr on the Monday & she said yes there is something there I will refer you but probably a cyst. The waiting game for an appointment came around fairly quickly & the following Monday 20th I saw the consultant. He examined me for 15 seconds & said he wasn’t concerned & to go to mammogram & US & they would probably drain it. I was so relieved. Walked straight in & had mammogram & was hardly sat down when called through for US. She said she was concerned by the lump it wasnt a cyst & she took biopsies of the lump & my lymph nodes which she said looked swollen. Sent back to the consultant who was surprised to see me…took me in & said it’s a suspicious lump that is more likely to be something than nothing. He wanted me back for the results that Thursday but he was fully booked Thursday & Friday. My appointment is tomorrow now. I have been through all the emotions that I have seen other people have been through on here. I just want to get on with getting rid of whatever it is. I keep thinking what has caused this….wine? Sugar? Coffee? Deodorant? All of which I have quit since last Monday (I may smell a little)! I’m 42 & everything you read says it’s unlikely in younger women but when they do it’s aggressive so that’s bothering me. I can see this chat is going to be very useful for me so I take any advice that anyone can offer.

Thank you,

Charls x

    Charls,

Take a breath , this is the most awful time the waiting game which almost killed me off! No kidding hardest thing I ever had to do.  , you don't know it's cancer yet but just suppose that it is for a minute. You are already in the system you are being looked after and you may need to have the lump out. In fact if it was me I would bloody well want the thing out!  So if that needs to happen it's not a painful operation and that will often be the end of it .  Sometimes people need a little radiation treatment and sometimes a little chemotherapy but you not at that stage at all at this time.  As you say sometimes younger women can get an aggressive tumor  but they survive too! It's a horrible time when you waiting to find out if you have breast cancer but treatment is very good now and it sounds like you found it early so don't race ahead just chil if you can relax and know you are already  on a path back to full health. BUT this experience is going to change you it always does it may have changed you already .  My bilateral mastectomy was 8 weeks ago it went fine I'm back up and doing stuff. Had a little dip yesterday when I found out I'm going to need chemotherapy but already on the way back up , well at least for now look after yourself

  • Hi Charls

Welcome to the forum and sorry to hear that you may have breast cancer.  There is no one cause of cancer it’s just the luck of the draw unfortunately. I know from listening to a cancer specialist that deodorant doesn’t cause cancer.

Wishing you the best of luck with your appointment tomorrow.

    Best wishes

  • Hi Charl42

Sorry to hear that it sounds like you have joined the club for those worrying about BC.

I don't think you should blame yourself and things you have used or done for your lump. Who gets things like this is just down to random bad luck. Don't prejudge what you are going to hear tomorrow.

The good thing is that you don't have too long to wait to find out what is what. If it is the news that you don't want to hear, outcomes have progressed so much in the past few years, your team will get you a treatment plan in place tailored to your situation.

Wishing you al the best and let us know how things go.

You are so right about alcohol and sugar I have cut the sugar too, but need a wine now and then and I know that's sugar too but need it at present. As I have no breast  tissue left my surgeon said I can't get breast cancer! So I will go with that but do know I need to cut the wine out all together X

  • If its any help at all I have felt terribly guilty about continuing HRT. However, I was previously told by the Head of a Breast Cancer Clinic that it is age which is a big factor in why people get cancer, and we can't stop the age process can we ?

I was on HRT for far to long too. But my breast care nurse stopped me from beating myself up saying "there are only two reasons why women get breast cancer, one you are a woman and two you are getting older"! She reminded me that many people are on HRT all their lives and never get it, and that other people do all the 'right' things (cut out alcohol, coffee, smoking, HRT,  sugar etc. and keep fit and a good weight) and they still get it.

As for you, Charl42, it's not long until you find out more information and we'll all be thinking of you and hoping.  But in the meantime, don't beat yourself up about what you have or haven't done! x

  • I agree with what's been said. It really is like the lottery except you don't get the money! I asked if it was a lifestyle thing and was told no. I'm ok not bad diet, maybe too much choc which is my bad habit but don't drink or smoke. Yes been on pill for 30 odd years but no one ever said it was bad for you. Just bad luck. But.. its treatable, my cancer is gone, I'm recovering from effects of radiotherapy.  You've found something you didn't like, have been to get it checked out and not long to wait to find out. Good luck x
