How Long Has This Been Going On

Hello everyone, sorry I'm still in a bit of a shock, as I'm sure you can all recognise, I've just been diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer after routine mammogram showed two small areas behind left nipple. This was followed up by 3D mammogram, ultrasound along with biopsies and insertion of metal markers. Appointment yesterday confirmed their suspicions and now to see surgeon in 2 weeks time at local hospital to discuss surgery and follow up treatment or depending on pathology of cancer maybe benefit from hormone therapy..the doctor said that information wasn't ready at this stage. But assured me that a wait of a few weeks wasn't an issue as the cancer grows slowly...and at the moment they are very small...so I suppose what I need to know if that is true, and how long could I have had these cancer areas? So sorry that we are all here, but know how much support I got 11 years ago from Macmillan forum when my late husband was diagnosed with GBM  brain tumour . It really is a lifeline.

  • I read that cancer cells double in size every 50 - 200 days, so depending on size of tumour, you could have had it for years. It sounds like yours are small if only showing up on mammogram and stage 1, and you probably haven't had it that long, so I would trust your medical team when they say they are not worried about a wait of a few weeks. I had 7 weeks between finding my lump and starting chemo but in that time I had lots of different tests so that they tailored the treatment for my exact situation. My lump was around 40mm, the chemo shrunk it and results of lumpectomy showed no lymph node involvement - even though I probably did have mine for years!

Thanks, that's reassuring from someone who's been there, I'm trying to be optimistic in that the 2 areas are small and not near lymph nodes...but suppose it's only natural to feel you want it to be gone ASAP,  but I'll be patient and try my best to reasure my partner whose late wife died 14 years ago with breast cancer, he's very impatient probably for that reason....so are you clear of cancer now and if so how often do you get check up?

Sounds like a very early Breast cancer that should be easier to treat . Wishing you well

Thank you  ..wishing you all the best too x

  • I am clear of cancer. I had my lumpectomy in February and finished rads in April. I haven't had a check up yet, but my BCN was really clear to me that I should be doing regular self-checking and that the yearly mammogram is just a catch all. I had been concerned as I have dense breasts so my lump didn't show up on mammogram, only ultrasound (& MRI & CT scan). Good luck with the next few weeks, it is the hardest point, getting all the tests and waiting for a treatment plan. Once you have it, you just kind of get on with it. Your life does become about cancer for a while, though I worked throughout treatment so had something else to occupy my brain when I physically couldn't do anything.

Then suddenly, you're through the other side and have your life back.
