I’ve just completed the surgery, now awaiting appointment for the radiotherapy

what is the radiotherapy experience like??

  • Hello. Welcome. Hope you are recovering well after surgery. Radiotherapy takes a while to be organised. I was told 6-8 weeks but it was more like 11 although I was sent to a different hospital. Read my profile for more. Its tiring but that's because I drive myself and the appointments don't run to time so waiting is boring. The actual treatment is ok. only slightly pink book and a little heavy.

there is also a regular thread if you want to read more:

good luck. taking it one day at a time x

I'm at the same stage as you, Hopeandprayers, awaiting radiotherapy too.  I had an appointment to discuss it first (consent etc.) and a couple of days later went back for a CT scan and four tattoos (they drew on me with felt pens first and then tattooed little dots on me which look like someone had done a dot with a biro on my skin).  The CT scan was painless (had to put my arms up in stirrup type things and stay relatively still) and the tattoos were no more painful than regular vaccinations for 'flu.   When the machine moved me into the CT scanner I felt as if I was staring in a TV drama like "House".  The machine was smaller than scanners I've seen on the television, doughnut shaped and somewhat futuristic.  I didn't feel in the least bit claustrophobic an my body glided in and out of it and I could see the other side.

Thank you, Tired Minion, I'm going to read your profile next to find out more.

    All the best, Hopeandprayers.

  • CT scan isn't comfy but don't feel obliged to have both arms up unless you are having radiotherapy in both boobs. I did for the scan but was so cold and shivering I had to go back. it really hurt my shoulder blades at back so for the treatment I only have my left arm up and it makes it easier for the breath hold (this is only if you are left breast affected). I likened it to a polo mint. it was just tiring as it took an hour as they get all the positioning and measurements done at scan. Good luck too x
