Hi all, I'm am new to the group. I was diagnosed with breast cancer in June. I have had to have a mastectomy. I'm recovering well from that. I now have to start 8 sessions of chemotherapy. I start this on Wednesday, it's a daunting thought. Can anyone give me a few pointers that would help with my first session.
Thanka
Hi Huntygirl
Welcome to the forum and sorry to hear that you have been diagnosed with Breast Cancer. While I won’t say chemo is easy it is doable. Bring something with you to keep you occupied while you are having treatment as you will be on the oncology ward for at least a couple of hours. Drink plenty of fluids. Don’t be afraid to tell your nurse if you are feeling unwell at any time during treatment and they will do whatever it takes to get up better. You will be given meds to help with any possible side effects.
Wishing you the best of luck with your treatment.
Best wishes

Hi Huntygirl, sorry to hear you have BC but you are in the right place for support and advice, chemo is not as bad as it's press, take a book or laptop as it can be quite boring just sitting whilst getting the chemo, I found my first treatment a bit of an anticlimax, not sure what I expected but the chemo nurses are brilliant and will give you all the support you need tomorrow. Love Ann
Hi, I’ve had 2 of 12 cycles of paclitaxal and so for I have felt fine. Some side effects but not what I was expecting. I take an iPad and phone a use the free WiFi to what daytime tv, or Netflix. I find the time goes really quickly. I also had a double mastectomy and my recovery had been good. The chemo nurses said paclitaxal is one of the better chemo drugs. Do you know which one you are having?
Hi Jaksprat57
I had my first treatment yesterday, I wasn't there that long about 2.5 hrs but they had to give me the steroids and anti sickness first (which I now have at home ready for next time). The actual chemo of two shringes only took about 30mins. Just waiting for my prescriptions. So next time I think it will be alot quicker. I have to have 4 sessions of Doxorubicin & Cyclophosphamide. Then after that 4 sessions of Paclitaxel. All treatments will be every weeks if it all goes to plan. I feel fine this morning, no symptoms as of yet but I know that it is early days yet I have had a single mastectomy and also recovered well. How often do you have your treated and how long does that take. Nurse told me yesterday to expect over three hours for the Paclitaxel. Thanks for getting back to me xx
Hi Huntygirl My first cycle was Herceptin and Perjeta and I was there for 7 hours as they needed to deliver them slowly to check I had no reaction. The next day I had paclitaxal and was only there for 3 hours. Paclitaxal is weekly for 12 weeks. Herceptin & Perjeta is 3 weekly for 18 cycles. I’ve been told that when I have all 3 drugs it won’t be 7 hours as they can be delivered quicker. I had the second cycle of paclitaxal yesterday and it was about 3 hours ago in. I also feel fine this morning. Good luck with the paclitaxal. Xx
Good morning Hunty and Jacksprat
I am glad to hear that you are not feeling too bad after you chemos. Long may this continue. I hope that you both get through with minimum side effects. They are certainly much better at controlling these nowadays.
Wishing you a good day
