Hi
im getting myself worried. Around 10 days ago my daughter was going to bed and as she was laying on her side she said that one of her breasts were really painful so I gave her ibuprofen. The next morning she said she felt a lump in her breast. I felt it too and it felt like a hard lump. I remained calm and made an appointment with the gp last Friday. The dr felt the lump and said it could be hormonal. She said if it’s still there when she gets her next period to come back and she will be referred to the breast clinic. As my daughter was with me I didn’t ask her any questions as I didn’t want to get my daughter worried. But when I’m now on my own I’m feeling really worried. I’m so scared it’s something serious.
I know it’s extremely rare for children to have anything serious but I can’t help it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
My mind is going into overdrive.
My daughters breast has now stopped hurting it’s now just the lump.
Thanks
Hi Azd, worrying about our chidren has got to be one of the worst feelings and I really feel for you.
As you say the chances it's something sinister is very unlikely but you have done the right thing going to your doctor and getting it checked. You probably already are but while you wait for her next period I would keep an eye on the size of the lump and if it gets larger go back to your doctor. Also keep an eye for any change to the appearance of her breast and again if you notice anything go back to your doctor.
At that age there are all sorts of hormonal things going on and it really is very likely nothing.
Hope all goes well and the lump disappears soon x
Hi Azd, this is all of our worst nightmare situations and my mind would be in overdrive too. This will probably turn out to be nothing at all but I’d not leave it either. If 10 days on that lump is still there and unchanged I would suggest that hormones seems an odd explanation. It could be all manner of innocent things cysts, etc so please try not to worry anymore than you are until you’ve been seen but I do think this needs further assessment and when you go back when she starts her next period (2weeks?) it be very firm in demanding a referral. To put your mind at ease a bit, 2 weeks is unlikely to make a huge difference.
I have had 3 benign cysts in my teens and 20’s that needed removal simply because they were uncomfortable, two in the groin, one in the armpit so I know that young bodies can do odd things. I also have a fatty lump about a pea size just under the skin of my thigh which is some weird fat thing! But in my experience lumps are always ‘something’ so that’s all I can share. I also have a 12 year old so maybe I’m answering with my heart here but until you have an exact reason for what it is make no apologies at all in using your elbows. All the best of luck and please will you come back and let us know what happens xx
