Hi all,

Was diagnosed August 8th. Lumpectomy followed by radiotherapy and hormone therapy. Was hoping to get the operation date quite soon and start the process of getting through all this but have been told the op won't happen until the end of September. Is it common to wait 6-8 weeks for the lumpectomy?

  • Hello and welcome.  I was diagnosed 3rd June 2015.  I had surgery mid July due to clash of surgeon and radiographer's holidays - I had wire guided surgery so had to have wire inserted by radiography and then surgeon did actual operation.  I then had radiotherapy in September.  I didn't require hormone therapy as after surgery biopsy it was not found to be hormone positive.

    I had High grade DCIS.

I know the waiting is hard  as you just want to get on with it xx

Hi I had my diagnosis end of May tgen had to have more tests which delayed everything longer finally got my op (lumpectomy and lymph nodes) on 26th July. Just had all clear for no other cancer found but I thought I would be starting radiotherapy 6 weeks after op but it seems not. I have to see the oncologist first and from what I've heard from others on here average wait is 12 weeks then he decides what you need next! Currently also waiting results for an oncotype DX test which comes from America and rakes 3 weeks so they can decide my future risks.  All takes time so your wait is nothing new. Its horrible waiting yiu just want to get on with it get it done and hopefully move on but it's not like that it seems! Hope it all goes smoothly for you and you get good results. Good luck x

Thank you for replying, it’s comforting to know it’s not just me. Seems to be a running theme that this is a big waiting game. Good luck for the results of your DX test and best wishes for your journey towards beating this :) Take care x

  • welcome. I've found my diagnosis to surgery was quite quick (4 weeks) but then its taken a long time to get oncology appointment and then dates for radiotherapy - around 11 weeks. Perhaps cos its a different hospital but same trust. There's more in my profile. I just want things to get underway. The waiting game is not a nice one to get roped into but we all have to play.  It also depends on hospital, trust, where you are in the country and dare I mention it covid because it has affected staff numbers, availability and extra tests prior to treatment. i've tried to distract myself with things I enjoy but the anxiety/stress of waiting is playing havoc with my head! It's hard but keep going x

Thank you for replying. That’s great that you didn’t wait too long. Yes you’re right, I’ve been quoted COVID as a reason for longer waiting times. Finally got a date today, pre op 21st September and op 14 th October, only a text message at the moment so expecting confirmation letter any day. Feels good to have a date to plan towards. I’m in Southampton, where are you based? Good luck with the radiotherapy :) x

  • I'm south Manchester so was at The Nightingale centre at Wythenshawe for surgery but now treatment continues at The Christie for radiotherapy. Covid has a lot to answer for but I think people have been reticent to go to doc when issues and then now things are better they've gone. I'm quite stunned at the amount of new people joining with diagnosis.

Things are better when there is a plan. It brings that element of self control back whereas the waiting game is not nice. Good luck x

Hi there, my initial mammogram was on 28th May and the follow-up appointment at the assessment clinic where they took a biopsy took place on 9th June.  I was given the first of the biopsy results on 21st June and my lumpectomy took place on 21st July.  The date was planned around the Consultant's availability (he was going on holiday) and he told me that a short delay wasn't going to make a difference with my kind of cancer.  There were various appointments betweenwhiles which made the waiting a little easier.  If you're still worried about the delay having read everyone's comments, then do contact your Breast Care Nurse / GP and ask them.  Maybe it can be brought forward or maybe there is no need to be so anxious about the potential date.
