Hi everyone. I’m new to the forum. I’m half way through my chemo for Triple Negative Breast Cancer. Completed 8 weeks of Accelerate EC and just started 3/12 weeks of carboplatin and paclitaxel. The side effects are manageable but I’ve started piling on weight and it’s really getting me down. I eat quite well - healthy homemade and avoid too much sugar. Is anyone else finding this and can anyone give me advice. I’m too exhausted a lot of the time to exercise but I’d do walk every day.
Hi Stayingpositive2021
Welcome to the forum and sorry to,hear that you have been diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer. Like you I’ve put on weight while undergoing treatment. Have you been prescribed steroids to help counteract side effects? If you have that could explain the weight gain while undergoing treatment.
Wishing you the best of luck with the rest of your treatment.
Best wishes

Thanks Daisy yes I’ve been taking steroids for the past 10 weeks but hopefully can reduce these now . Otherwise I’ll have to buy a whole new wardrobe!!
Hi Stayingpositive2021 it might not be what you are after but here is a research Trial which I've signed up for that may interest you - free online nutrition / physical exercise and emotional support for people with cancer (i.e. a kind of personal trainer who's a cancer expert)
If you are interested have a look at https://safefit.nhs.uk/
Hi everyone,
Does anyone have experience with the safefit.nhs trial ?
I'm having palliative Chemo and feel plagued by the constant fatiegue. That said , I'm putting my best foot forward every day, pottering about, walking the dog once a day ( I actually I call it a stagger, LOL). Worried this trial might not be appropriate for me. I don't want to waste their time, nor overstretching myself.
ANY experience, advice very much appreciated, xxx
I lost a bit of weight during EC but gained during docetaxel. Most of mine was water weight - I noticed my feet were puffy and I couldn't get any rings off any more. I asked my oncologist about it a couple of times (6 weeks then 12 week appointments after chemo) and he said it was early days. I finally got my rings off a few weeks ago, 6 months after chemo and my feet are starting to look like mine again.
I would try not to worry about it just now. Your body needs fuel to build all those cells that are getting destroyed. I too ate really healthily during chemo but definitely noticed weight gain during docetaxel.
Worry about getting it off when you're finished. You'll get your life back again. I was able to start walking and running again and I have probably never looked better!
Chemo is harsh, be kind to yourself and get through this without thinking about body image. You'll be able to sort that when you are recovering.
I signed up for the SafeFit trial and have been on it since April (Chemo was from Feb to July). I was matched with the most wonderful instructor and have been doing weekly Yoga and Pilates with her ever since over Zoom. For the first three months I met with her 3 times a week, then it dropped to once a week, now it’s once a month until the trial ends in early Oct. I’m also able to attend her other classes as a non paying guest at the moment and I’m planning to continue as a paying customer when the trial ends.
All the exercise has been tailored for my capabilities, particularly during chemo. While it was designed to challenge, it was never too much. In fact, it made me feel better and less fatigued.
She’s been a godsend for me, both for my physical and mental well-being. We chat (a lot!) as well as exercise so she now knows that while I’m pretty fit and capable, I can be a bit lazy if not pushed!
I would highly recommend SafeFit to anyone. Give it a go!
Best wishes xx
This is exactly what I need! I’ve registered. Saying 2-3 week wait but look forward to hearing from them. Thank you so much.
Thank you for your wise advice and kind words. It means a lot! Glad to hear your out the other side.
Hi Katherine.h.p.
do you know whether they're still taking people on now, even though the trial is ending in October ?
Your advice much appreciated ! xxx
