Hi there I’m new to the forum. I’m 52 and just been recalled after my second mammogram. I went to local breast clinic yesterday where I had further mammogram and ultrasound. The consultant said there was some calcification which needed investigating. She said it could be a sign of ductal carcinoma. She asked me to go back today which I did and had a biopsy. I was expecting one needle in, but they actually took five lots of samples. The radiographer explained the calcifications were in the right upper quadrant of the right breast.
I just wondered whether anyone had a similar experience of having so many samples taken. Is this normal and what we’re your results. I’m due back for my results next week.
Hi
I had a real letter after my second routine mamogram, like you told calcification where normal and usually nothing to worry about in the same appointment I had another mamogram an ultra scan and a biopsy. Results followed and I have Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) grade 3 which is non invasive cells. I had a operation to remove the area and results showed it hadn't Invaded but the clear area was small so had another scrape last week, my results are monday, hopefully radiotherapy and a clear result
You have caught things early with your mamogram, try not to worry but best advice is take someone with you and a note pad and pen, it's so much information to take in when you are feeling a bit nervous
Read people's post and the information on this site has been so valuable to me
Wish you well x
Hi,
I am only 32 so wasn’t under the national routine mammogram but I noticed the first lump myself. I thought there was only one but I am no expert at checking breasts nor was I checking them regularly beforehand. I had a mammogram & ultrasound following my findings and a physical examination from a breast surgeon.
I was warned they may need to take a biopsy and they actually took three during that first ultrasound appointment. I ended up at the hospital for 4 hours because they kept needing to repeat the mammograms and they placed the tiny metal ‘markers’ on the tumours which meant they kept rescanning me to check they had ‘marked’ the right things and were in the right place.
My results took two weeks to come back and I was called back into clinic for them, I took my partner with me. Like the previous post advises, take something with you to write things down if you need to. I didn’t do this but was quite blindsided by my results anyway so probably wasn’t in a position to start writing things down. The surgeon who gave me the results actually wrote some things down and gave them to me anyway. She drew a diagram to explain the three lumps they found in my breast/lymph nodes. I’m absolutely rubbish at clinical terms and proper wording for types of tumours, a lot of that has gone over my head but the main points I took in.
Just because they took five biopsies doesn’t automatically mean it’s really bad, the radiographer will have wanted to be thorough which is better than to miss potential things. Well done for having the courage to ask the questions and talk on here, I’m new to this site, well I’m new to all of this to be honest and it’s terrifying. But hang in there, I’m sure waiting for those results will pretty much take up most of your thinking but the time will pass. How are you feeling physically since the biopsies? Do you have any tenderness? I had slight tenderness and quite a bit of bruising, but a breast care nurse who examined me 4 weeks after the biopsies and saw there was still bruising said they must have moved around quite a bit a knocked a few blood vessels. Try not to worry if you get lots of bruising it will clear. Keep the dressing dry for 24 hours and keep it padded to help reduce bruising.
Good luck and try and remain positive
I had 5 biopsies taken at my recall after my routine mammogram; the Consultant told me he was seriously concerned and mentioned cancer. He said that rather than go back to him for my results he wanted to refer me directly to a hospital of my choice.
Turned out it was a stage 2 cancer and only one lump, and within two months of my initial mammogram the hospital had removed it. I know I'm lucky, I did stress during all the waits for result, but I kept in mind that 90% of women who complete breast cancer treatment don't have to go back for more in the next 10 years (I'm pretty sure I got the statistics right but even if it's wrong, it was a comforting thought).
Wishing you all the best
... if you are worried you won't take it all in, get a relative or friend to listen to the consultation on a phone placed on the desk, they can take notes for you.
Hello. I was recalled after my first routine screening in 2015 for breast calcifications in 2 areas. First area 10mm, second 5 mm. I had biopsy - can't remember the type they call it but I was sat clamped into mammogram machine and a machine came down and took 6 samples from each area so 12 samples in total. This was different to the biopsy I had at year 3 check up where they they took one biopsy by hand guided by ultrasound.
Anyway my results from 2015 biopsy were DCIS intermediate grade in 10mm, benign in 5mm. I was told as it's calcification not a lump they take a few samples across area to be sure.
Mine was in upper left quadrant of left breast. I had wire guided lumpectomy - also called Wide local Excision (WLE) as day surgery. The wire inserted under local - less painful than biopsy, to ensure they remove right area. After surgery my DCiS was upgraded to High grade. I then had radiotherapy. This was followed by 5 years of routine screening. At year 3 they saw something in good breast, hence biopsy but turned out to be a bruise.
