I've been diagnosed with breast cancer in the last month.

I have invasive ductal carcinoma, grade one, oestrogen receptor positive 7/8, Her2 negative

I had an MRI last week, and was told the next appt would be with a breast surgeon.  Now I have been given an appt for an abdominal x-ray (or was it ultra sound?... I have to fast before it).

Can anyone tell me if this is a standard procedure?  It wasn't something I was told about at any point.  I've asked the team, but not yet had a response.

Thanks!

  • Hi spooncarver, it sounds like the CT scan and if that’s the case totally normal, I had an MRI, CT and Bone scan and I think that’s standard everywhere so try not to worry more than you already are, I know it’s easier said than done. All the best of luck xx

  • Sounds to me like you're getting good and standard treatment, though everyone is different and it is possible to get treatment entirely tailored to you as an individual. I'm still learning, at the radiotherapy stage now. Could be they're checking to see whether you could be a possible candidate for DIEP op. Your team should tell you though what its for or whoever is responsible for making the X ray appt.I had biopsies first then saw Breast Surgeon who then fired off a whole load of blood tests, MRI, CT scan, referrals to Consultant for DIEP discussion as an option to consider.

  • Not in my neck of the woods. Never had a CT scan and only got an MRI of my boobs after the second HER2+ tumour was found. When the first ER+ HER2- stage 2 was diagnosed I was offered no further investigations.

  • I had a CT scan because my lump was 55mm. They told me it was standard to do this for any larger lumps.

Apparently they spotted some incidental simple cysts on my liver during the breast MRI.  This next scan is for clarity.  I should have been told about it after the MDT, but it got missed.  Hard not to worry!

I think the problem is that I haven't had a proper debrief after the MDT, so these extra appointments are coming as a bit of a surprise.  I do feel that I'm getting tailored treatment, which is great.  Interesting that the scan could be giving more info about DIEP too.  So much to learn!

I'm starting to learn that there's no single pathway through all this!  I've not been scheduled for CT - I think I was told that they'd only do this if they found cancer in my sentinel lymphs after surgery.  But, I could have that wrong.... so much info to pick up!

  • I don't know quite why they do a CT scan anyway to be honest. I had an MRI with contrast dye and a CT scan on same afternoon. I'm afraid I am not sure what the difference is on the result other than that I know the MRI will show very clearly where the cancer spots are and it will show up veins etc. and give the surgeon a very clear idea of what's really going on. I'm a big fan of ultrasound.

I've been filing my correspondence today and came across my letter about CT scan and MRI scan done on same day. What they are for is to show up if there is cancer - ie a spread - to any other areas of the body or organs. So very important and necessary.

  • I really hope you get more clarity from the scan, all the best of luck x
