Hello champions

Diagnosed with breast cancer about 10 weeks ago.

After what feels like forever and lots of investigations, I have the following information:

Right breast 68mm DCIS affecting the lower right inferior pole.

Left breast 33x33mm DCIS in lower inner quadrant, with 'small invasive focus'.

I'm HER2 negative.

Oestrogen/progesterone positive.

Nil lymph node involvement found so far (on examination or ultrasound).

As I have small breasts, a mastectomy on the right has been recommended.

I have been offered a lumpectomy/MICAP flap reconstruction/radiotherapy on the left, but it has also been suggested that a mastectomy may be more appropriate as they might not completely remove everything during the lumpectomy.

I am therefore considering a double mastectomy, and reconstruction either immediate or delayed, during which they will check the sentinel nodes.

I will also require hormone tablets. Can't say I'm looking forward to these, as I already have lots of menopausal hot flushes. But I'm grateful that I will be alive!

I have been advised that if I have a mastectomy on the left, then I won't need radiotherapy. Has anyone else experienced this? I don't particular want radiotherapy (who does?), as I'm concerned about it affecting my heart (I have arrythmias and valve issues). However, I'm a little surprised (and grateful) it's not required.

My surgeon says I won't need chemo either. I have read somewhere that ladies who are HER2 negative and hormone positive often have oncotyping to determine their reoccurrence risk/need for chemo. Is this something other lovely ladies have experienced?

I'm waiting an appointment with the plastic surgeons at East Grinstead.

Otherwise, I'm a district nurse, so it's going to get some getting used to receiving rather than giving care.

My hubby passed away 3 years ago, so I live alone.

I recently returned from living in Australia for 15 years (hate heat).

I'll be 53 next month.

I look forward to hearing about your experiences.

Lots of love.

Christine.

    Hi Wissy423

I am also a nurse practitioner and struggled terribly to suddenly become a patient.
I have Her2 positive hormone negative stage 3 so have had radiotherapy and surgery and have been on chemotherapy for a year now. I’m in every 3 weeks and scheduled to finish 12th December!!!
I’m sorry to hear that you lost your husband, that’s hard. I hope you have other family support.

ive only just become active in this community but it’s so relatable and reminds me I’m still human and allowed to moan and feel sad.
