Hi I'm due my second session of chemotherapy in a few days.  I've heard that the second one is much worse than the first. What have been peoples experience?

  • Hi

Sorry to hear you're having to go through chemo.  I didn't have it, so can't give you any advice and hopefully someone is around now who can give you their thoughts.  However, in the meantime, you might want to join in this thread which is specifically for ladies going through chemo. at the moment.

    Kindest wishes, Lesley

  • Hi , I guess it depends on type of chemo you are having? I havent heard that tbh.  I have heard that chemo is cumulative so can build up over  time. Im on 3/6 of fec and  I don’t think any have been worse than the other but this third one has been different in that I wasnt tired in the same way as the first two so funnily enough was more manageable. Hope that helps to reassure you in some way xx

  • Mine wasn't worse. All cycles were similar, but also a bit different! I'd recommend keeping a diary of symptoms as it helps look back to see where you were at in previous cycles.

I had EC-T, and the EC followed the same pattern each cycle though side effects slightly different each time (just variations on the same thing). Same with docetaxel, which was different to EC

  • Hi that's really helpful. I'm on fec so it's good to know. Thank you so much

  • Thanks that's really helpful

  • Hi, my second was much better than the first as I ws proactively taking heartbreak and anti sickness meds which better controlled the side effects, especially the heartburn.  Honestly I felt a bit m tired in the last couple of cycles but I did not experi ne the cumulative fatigue that people talk about. I also worked all the way through.  Good luck

  • Hi,

I had 4 x Fec and 4x Doc. I really would recommend on patting yourself on the back after a treatment, focusing on how many treatments are left and literally just deal with how you feel at the time. Everybody has there own experiences and thoughts and inputs. I never went down this path and dealt with the here and now, Im a chicken and easily frightened.

All the very best to you

  • I'm having the same treatment as you. My first session left me with terrible side effects, so when I heard that the second one is more difficult, it scared me. I'm seeing the consultant tomorrow so I'll see if he has any ideas. I'm also a chicken but I like to know what's coming. I agree about counting down the treatment though. I keep telling myself by the weekend I'll be two down and four to go.

  • It’s horrible when you have such bad side effects, especially when you read people haven’t had many, tell your consultant all your side effects and the nurses, they will be able to give you drugs to help you with the side effects and adjust your treatment so you may find that because they help you manage the side effects better that you don’t have such a bad experience next time, fingers crossed for you x
