I've just had my 7th chemo treatment and my 3rd docetaxel and I'm having lots of side effects. My feet are very numb and peeling and my toe and fingernails really hurt. Some of my nails have started to lift which is freaking me out. I've been wearing dark nail varnish and keeping out of the sun (which is no mean feat in this weather!). Just wondering if anyone had any other helpful tips???

  • Hi Lilylu

Sorry to hear that you are having lot's of side effects from your treatment.  If you aren't using foot cream I would recommend that you use it to stop your feet peeling.

    Hope this helps.

  • Hi  sorry to hear you’re having these issues, I’ve had similar. I’ve just finished chemo, having had 4 x EC and 4 x Docetaxol and am hoping they clear over the next few weeks.

For my peeling feet I’ve been using Eucerin 10% Urea cream and that seems to be working. It stops the tight burning feeling and helps the peeling bits come away without having to pick it off (yukky I know!). Also feels lovely if you keep it in the fridge! Boots do it online and I’ve also got it from Amazon. I read an article on BreastCancer.org which recommended using 10% urea cream.

For finger and toenails, I’m using Polybalm following a recommendation from ladies on the monthly chemo thread and again, this seems to be helping reduce the lift. My toenails aren’t too bad but my fingernails did look a bit sorry for themselves. It does seem to make the nails grow like mad though so you need to keep cutting them short so you don’t catch them on anything.I’m also being obsessive about using rubber gloves for any kind of task to minimise exposure to hot water or cleaning stuff, and to avoid any risk of infection.

If you haven’t already done so, I’d tell your oncologist/nurse about numbness as this is something they might be able to help with, by reducing your final chemo dose. I did and had my dose reduced for the last two cycles and the effects do seem to be reducing.

Hope things improve for you and that you nail your final chemo! From reading posts on this site, it does feel like there is light at the end of the tunnel and that things really do start to improve quite quickly once you’ve finished xx
