Hi. I had a mastectomy and sentinel node biopsy 10 days ago. Stitches into my armpit that aren't as well healed as the rest (still raised and red) and my armpit is tender above the stitches and to be fair a bit smelly!!!
Does anyone have any tips on a good natural deodorant and how to help get the air to that area?? Or any other tip ?
Thankyou x
Hi Welsh1e
While I don’t have a suggestion for a good natural deodorant I noticed you haven’t had any replies yet so I thought I’d reply to you. Your local health food shop should be able to recommend a good natural deodorant for you. I’d suggest wearing a vest in order to let the air at your wound.
Best wishes

I brought a natural salt stick deodorant from amazon, and that seems good. Is your drain still I? I had my op on the 7th July, and I still have mine in. I had a lumpectomy with a licap reconstruction and axillary lymph node clearance. I try to wear a bra, but it makes you feel bruised, doesn't it?
I’m doing good thanks.
I have no experience of swelling in my armpit as it hasn’t happened to me but there should be other people on this forum who no doubt have experience of swelling. If you’re worried about it ring your breast care nurse and she should be able to help.

Hi Betsy car
Thanks for replying. My drain came out at 7 days. They said it had to although it read 20 in previous 24 hrs but that was much lower than if had been at 75/85.
I had a right breast mastectomy and sentinel lymph node biopsies. Im sore- in particular my armpit. I've not tried a bra yet. I'm very bruised
Do they recommend a bra if you've had some reconstruction?
I cant have reconstruction yet as back to clinic 23rd for results of biopsies and they did say probably further surgery to remove lymph nodes and/or chemo/radiography.
It is very scarey and at the moment I don't know what my treatment plan is going to be or exactly what I am facing going forward but so good to read about how other people are doing
I will have a look on amazon now !!
I go for results on the 27th. It is scary. I suppose I was lucky because when they did the ultrasound they saw a swollen lymph node and did a biopsy, which was cancerous, so it saved me having to have an extra op to remove them all. 5hey said they would only have to reoperate if the margins weren't clear. I've only tried the bra twice, but like you I'm very bruised. I'm hoping I will just need the Radiotherapy and tablets. But what will be, will be x Tske care x
I was given a bra (compression) by BC Nurse and because of reconstruction told to wear it immediately after the op. They checked whether I did even ! I have been awfully bruised and swollen. Not so much sore, but I asked BC Nurse to do ultrasound test to check what was going on. Area around armpit was full of inflammation, which could be seen on ultrasound only. I think it's because of all the work the Surgeon does to remove tissue, nodes. I asked for check really because although I was doing the exercises, my whole arm hurt when I woke up and improvement on mobility very slow. I think when you put tissue through a lot of operating, when it's not used to it, it just rebels. I always bruise a lot, but if you don't normally (eg when they do biopsies) I'd check with BC Nurse. They like to help.
