Hi everyone, I’ve been  very recently diagnosed with breast cancer, just been for an appointment today and looks like I will be starting chemo within the next 2 weeks. I’m feeling a little overwhelmed with everything at the moment, the nurse Macmillan nurse has recommended using the cold cap when my chemo starts, has anyone else done this and how was it ?

  • Hi Jome I was diagnosed in May and having chemo every two weeks just finished my third session today. I will be going on to weekly after my next session. I have been using the cold cap and to be honest the first 10 mins are the worse it feels like brain freeze! But after the first 10 mins it is ok. My hair has thinned but I still have some and that I am great-full for.  I would say give it a go to see how you get on as you have to make the decision the first time you start the treatment

    • Hi Jome, I've completed 6 sessions of chemo & used the cold cap each time. As Erika21 has said the first 10 minutes are the worst but it's very doable. Take magazines or books to distract your mind as you are there for a while. The chemo nurses are lovely & will chat to you & help you through it. I've got shoulder length thick hair & whilst my hair still thinned out particularly above the ears where the cap doesn't reach, I still have plenty left. It's definitely worth trying it as you can stop it at anytime if it's not for you. Take a beanie hat to wear home as your hair will still be very damp after. I used the Aussie range, shampoo & conditioner & baby your hair when you wash it. Wishing you all the very best with your treatment.
