Briefly I am 74. I was diagnosed with HER2 positive breast cancer in Feb after a self referral mammogram. I had surgery to remove a small lump at the end of March end given a treatment plan of 4 chemos, 1 year of Herceptin, radiotherapy and 10 years on tablets. I have just had the third chemo snd I have never had such an awful week in my life. The first 2 treatments were tolerable but I can’t do this. I don’t want to live the rest of my life feeling continually nauseous, exhausted, emotional, breathless etc.
OvernightI have come to the decision not to have any more chemo. I will talk to the team about any ongoing treatment but I just can’t live out my life feeling as I have done recently.
Hi there, so sorry to hear your chemo experience has been so hard. You might want to talk directly to your oncologist and see if it's possible to make any adjustments to the dose or give you any additional medication to stop the side effects. If this is your third cycle and you only have one to go maybe there are some adjustments they can make. My understanding is that the ongoing Herceptin won't have anywhere near the same side effects, it's the chemo drugs that cause these. Good luck and I hope you find a good way forward x
Thank you for replying. I’ve just had the longest night of my life but feel huge relief to have made my decision. I will talk to my Oncologist as I realise I’m going to need support at some point.
