Hi
I’ve recently had a diagnosis of DCIS following routine screening and need a mastectomy. So I’m facing that difficult decision about reconstruction. I already have a very poor implant reconstruction on the other side after mastectomy 14 years ago and this needs correcting as well.
I’m looking at having LD flap reconstruction on both sides but am worried about possible issues with loss of shoulder/arm strength- particularly for swimming.
Anyone out there who has had LD reconstruction and swims? I’d be really interested to know how it’s affected you
thanks
J
Hi Jayelcee and a very warm welcome to the online community
Although I don't have the experience you're after I noticed that your post hadn't had any replies yet. This is probably because this is such an active group that your post has slipped off the first page before someone with the right experience has seen it. Replying to you will 'bump' it back to the top of the discussion list where hopefully it'll be seen by someone who can share their experiences of reconstruction with you.
While you're waiting for replies it would be great if you could pop something about your diagnosis and treatment in your profile as it really helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar diagnosis. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

Hi,
I’m due to have an LD flap soon myself, so was wondering if you’d had the surgery done and how you’re getting on? I too am worried about how it’ll affect my capabilities post-op, I’m only 30 with a child under 1 to run around after so I’m concerned to say the least. Hope everything went well for you xx
Hi Belle
I decided against the LD flap as I was too concerned about the effect it might have on my upper body strength. I did have reassuring feedback from a couple of women who had the procedure and were very happy with it. Because I had the option I went for the DIEP flap using abdominal tissue but not muscle to create a bilateral reconstruction. I had to wait a long time for the surgery and post-op recovery is quite slow. But I made the right decision for me. I’m very pleased with the result and it seems like a miracle to be evenly matched again and without any foreign bodies in my chest. Thank you NHS!
Hi,
Thank you for getting back to me, this is the dilemma I’m facing, deciding between the two! I’m so worried about losing my upper strength being young with a young child, but I’d seen photos of some diep flap tummy scars and that worried me too, just can’t win can you! I’m so glad you’re happy with your result, hopefully I’ll reach that point in my life too someday.
xx
