Hi. It’s now 5 months since my lumpectomy. My cancer was hormone positive ( now on Letrozole), HER2 negative, lymph nodes clear, radiotherapy in March. My experience has been good but I now have pain in the underarm where the lymph nodes were removed. I first noticed it a few weeks after completion of radiotherapy treatment and was told it is chest wall pain due to the radiotherapy. It comes and goes but it’s now quite bad and I wondered if anyone else had experienced this.
Hi Jigsaw61
From the above I'm guessing you has sentinel node biopsy? If so that will leave some pain as this is a very sensitive area and has been marmalised to get the nodes to test. I had a full clearance and its still uncomfortable 14 months later so be patient. I find that massage and doing exercise helps.
You could, if still unsure, contact your BCN to be 100% happy...
Sam
Hi Sam
Thanks for getting back to me, I feel reassured now. What exercises do you do?
Claire
Hi Claire
Initially I just did the ones that were provided by the BCN (they were from Breast Cancer Now charity but each hospital has their own), I did these semi-religiously (!!) for 9 months until my DIEP reconstruction in Dec last year when I started another set of arm/stomach exercises and only stopped doing them a month or so ago as my upper body strength improved and had better mobility there and could do more at the gym (upper body weight (very small!) lifting).
I find that an overhead tricep stretch (google it) works the best to relieve any discomfort, it just needs a good stretch once in a while...but, as with all things cancer (!!), you may find something else that works better for you.
Sam
Thanks Sam, I’ll start those stretches tomorrow!
Claire
Jigsaw reading your story is a mirror image of my own story, 5 months post surgery, exact same diagnosis and treatment, I was worrying about the pain still being there too so I’m so glad I came acro your post and the reply to it, it has eased my mind and I will take on board the advise about exercise. Onwards and upwards, good luck in your journey
I would just like to say thanks for your reply to Jigsaw61 as I applies to my own journey too and appreciate your advise which I will also be following
