Hi. My name is Jamie and I am writing this in the hope that some of you brave souls may be able to help me?

I went to the emergency doctors with my mum on Sunday 9th May as she has found a large lump in the right breast. The doctor who examined her confirmed there was a lump and she measured it at 11cm by 8cm. She electronically sent a message to my mums GP to fast track her to the breast specialist.

On Wednesday, I accompanied my mum to the breast clinic where she had 2 mammograms and 2 ultrasounds... both her breasts came back as normal according to the scans. The doctor at the breast clinic said she wasnt happy with the scan results due to the fact that she and my mum can both feel a large lump which was confirmed to be 11cm by 8cm by the breast specialist also. The breast specialist decided to take a core biopsy of the suspicious area.

Both me and my mum are dumbfounded that such a large lump would not show on a scan, even if it was a cyst, if it was so large surely it would show up.

I have been researching possible reasons why some lumps may not show on routine US and Mammograms and now I'm worried that she may have breast cancer as some of them dont always show on scans.

We wont know anything until we get the results but the waiting is agonising and I cant even imagine how my poor mum must be feeling. Has anyone had any similar occurrences where a lump hasn't showed in the scans and if a benign condition could cause this to happen. I feel like I should mentally prepare myself for the worst because then if it's not the worst then it will be a huge relief  I'm scared of what the results will say, I've lost both my biological and step fathers to cancer and I know lung cancers run on my mums side of the family on her dads side. I mention this because my mum also has pain in her ribs underneath the breast and also in her shoulder blade.

  • Hi Jamie, I’m so sorry to read your post but you’ve certainly reached out to the right people, everyone on here is lovely snd I’m sure someone will help you. I’m here supporting my mum too and agree the waiting is awful.  The results should come through quite quickly, in the meantime try not to worry too much. If you want to chat to a fellow career please message me x

  • Hi , I am so sorry you and your mum are going through this, the waiting to found out whether it is or isn't cancer is sheer torture. Your mother is very lucky to have you supporting her.

The main thing to remember is that a lot of lumps turn out to be benign and even if it is breast cancer, breast cancer is very treatable these days with very high success rates.

Really hope it turns out to be benign.  Wishing you and your mum all the best.

Thabk you for your message. I know through the research I've done that the majority of lines turn out o be benign thank god, however the "what ifs" tend to be a constant feature. I feel like the lucky one having my mum, she really is my rock. Thanks again.

Hi  thank you very much for your reply, yes the waiting is unbearable. Even though I know the majority of lumps turn out to be benign, it's still so scary, I've heard so many times when people have had a diagnosis and I had no comprehension how much of a scary time it must have been for people, then something like this happens and it makes you realise that you have no idea what's around the corner. I will most definitely keep in touch and thank you for your kind words.

  •  one thing I forgot to say is that it really isn't a good idea to look for things online as a lot of the information is outdated or wrong and will unnecessarily panic you.  Hopefully your mum is given the all clear but if not please don't start researching things online.

I had breast cancer and now I am cancer free, it is very treatable these days. Hopefully not but should the worst happen keep posting on here and you and your mother will get lots of support.  If you click on people's names you will be able to read their profiles and you will see how many success stories there.

  • Hi Jamie,

So sorry to read your Mum and you are going through such a hard time. I would say waiting for the biopsy results was the worst time for me.  I tried to stay with reliable UK cancer sites like this one, other wise your mind can be all over the place.  As all the others say there is also a chance the are is benign as there can be other reasons for hard areas, lumps and bumps in breasts.

I have was diagnosed in March after feeling a large area .  Mine did not show on mammogram and showed on US scan.  I was told by one of the lead radiographers that  in 5 % of people sometimes it may not show due to breast density, age etc ( under 50 especially) which is why they use a 3 step approach in rapid diagnostic centres ( Mammogram, ultrasound with or without biopsy, examination) to confirm.   The area I have all showed in a MRI scan and is 65mm by 40mm..

I really hope its a false alarm for your Mum and that she is ok.  Every one on here have been so lovely and helped me through those days where I was waiting for results.  You have come to a good place for support.,
    Nat

Hi again. Yes I know I shouldn't of done online research but it was almost an automatic process. It's too late for me to unread what I've read but I do agree that this forum is a much better place for people to share and receive support, thank you. Xx

Hi Nat, thank you for your message. I think when I heard the words biopsy I just automatically went to the worst case scenario in my head. I'm also so aware that it could turn out to be benign. I'm a born worrier and it's not even me facing this tough time. I just want to be as informed as possible so that I know what I can do to be a support to my mum if it turns out to be the worst case. I will not read anymore online stuff as it can be quite scary, I will make sure I use this forum for any information in future.

I also meant to ask if you dont mind sharing, due to the receiving a diagnosis, how long did your biopsy results take to come back? They said we would receive them within 7 days however I've read they can be ready in as little as 2 or 3 days if all normal but longer than 7 days if its complicated if cancer is present. Do you think it's a good idea if she doesn't get a call in the next day or 2, to maybe call her Gp to see of theyve come back?

  • Hi, I am sure you Mum is very grateful for your support and how caring you are being.

In general I think its best to allow 7 days for results. My first biopsy was 7 days wait. They told me when they would be calling me though, I had a phone call slot in the afternoon of the day they said.

Its hard not to worry, I know, my Mum has been the same with me.  Try to find some distractions for both of you to get you through the next week.
