Hi. My name is Jamie and I am writing this in the hope that some of you brave souls may be able to help me?
I went to the emergency doctors with my mum on Sunday 9th May as she has found a large lump in the right breast. The doctor who examined her confirmed there was a lump and she measured it at 11cm by 8cm. She electronically sent a message to my mums GP to fast track her to the breast specialist.
On Wednesday, I accompanied my mum to the breast clinic where she had 2 mammograms and 2 ultrasounds... both her breasts came back as normal according to the scans. The doctor at the breast clinic said she wasnt happy with the scan results due to the fact that she and my mum can both feel a large lump which was confirmed to be 11cm by 8cm by the breast specialist also. The breast specialist decided to take a core biopsy of the suspicious area.
Both me and my mum are dumbfounded that such a large lump would not show on a scan, even if it was a cyst, if it was so large surely it would show up.
I have been researching possible reasons why some lumps may not show on routine US and Mammograms and now I'm worried that she may have breast cancer as some of them dont always show on scans.
We wont know anything until we get the results but the waiting is agonising and I cant even imagine how my poor mum must be feeling. Has anyone had any similar occurrences where a lump hasn't showed in the scans and if a benign condition could cause this to happen. I feel like I should mentally prepare myself for the worst because then if it's not the worst then it will be a huge relief I'm scared of what the results will say, I've lost both my biological and step fathers to cancer and I know lung cancers run on my mums side of the family on her dads side. I mention this because my mum also has pain in her ribs underneath the breast and also in her shoulder blade.
Yeah, I mean it will be 7 days on Wednesday so only a little bit more time. Yeah I will try and find some things for us to do next week, thank you for the nice idea. Yeah the worry is the worst bit especially as we dont know what we are dealing with yet but it's so refreshing to hear I'm not the only worrier. Thank you Nat, I hope you are doing ok wherever you are in your journey right now. X
Jamie.
Hi Jay9129
Sorry that your mum is going through this. As others have said it may be a benign lump. I went for a routine mammogram a few years ago and they found a lump in my right back and brought me back for another mammogram and scan and they did a biopsy and the lump turned out to be benign.
I will keep my fingers crossed that your mother's lump turns out to be benign as well.
Best wish to you and your mother
Daisy
Hi Nat, thank you for your reply. The doctor did say when she allowed me in the room briefly to explain what they were going to do that they would ring and rather give her the results on the phone or ask her to come in for the results. I'm hoping if they do it on the phone the news won't be as much to worry about? Perhaps I'm wrong, I know I've had test results come back clear but still had to go see the doctor for them. Ahhh my heads a shed to be honest! So grateful for all the messages so far, and to you Nat. This is a lovely community and I'm so grateful.
Hi Jay9129, I found a lump and it wasn't picked up on the mammogram as I have dense breasts. The did pick it up on the US though and I had a biopsy to confirm it was cancer. I think they can tell a lot from shape etc so they told me on the day of the tests that mine was likely cancer, even though we had to wait for the biopsy results to confirm.
Sorry you and your mum are going through this, waiting for results is the worst part! I would agree with others and try not to google too much. Until you know what you are dealing with, you will have no idea what to look up and it will just set your mind racing.
I saw my tumour on the ultrasound post-chemotherapy after it had shrunk down significantly. They were inserting a seed that would help them find it for the operation and asked if I wanted to see. My surgeon was struggling to even find the tumour with feeling it by then, but it was still obvious on ultrasound.
I hope that by reading all of the replies and posting on here it has helped you and your Mum. Wishing your Mum and you the best. I know what its like to be daughter and sister of someone with cancer as my father has had prostate and bowel cancer. My brother prostate. So I also empathise with the waiting with a relative for results. All the best. Nat
Hi Nat, yes it really has helped been on here... so much more reliable as people have actually had experience.
Thank you for your reply and I'm so sorry to hear it was bad news. I truly hope you are beating this. X
Thanks, Hopefully will hear a date soon for mastectomy for myself. Its been a long 8 weeks of scans, tests and appointments.
I'm sure that time has felt like an eternity, but I'm glad things have moved forward for you eventually and I'm wishing you all the luck in the world in your recovery.
Hi Jamie. I went through exactly the same as your mum - mammogram and ultra sound was clear, the Registrar at hospital was not happy as definately 5cm lump. He later spoke with main man who called me in to do biopsy, he explained that not all cancers show on scans!!! Unfortunately biopsy showed Lobular Cancer, I am now waiting for an MRI to check that it hasn't spread.
