Hi,
I'm new here I was diagnosed with breast cancer 5 weeks ago on the 21.4.2021 I had to have a mastectomy of my right breast. I was in hospital for one night and let home on the 22.4.2021 with a drain inserted. At first I couldn't look at my wound but now I have I am devastated. I have a lump to the top of the breast that is left and under my arm where the breast was removed I have a dog ear I believe this is the phrase used for this. Its massive I feel like a freak, deformed. I have not took this whole breast cancer very well and I feel ever so alone and anxious, tearful and depressed x
Hi Mt1962 welcome to the forum and I am so very sorry to hear how you are feeling and little wonder, its been a whirlwind for you.
I can imagine that the scars will look very angry at this time as you are only 7 days post surgery, which is still early and hopefully this will get better over time as the wounds begin to heal. Is the drain still in and is there anything still draining from this?
There is no good way to take any of this breast cancer stuff and what you are feeling is perfectly ok the whole thing can be very overwhelming, happens so quickly and leaves you wondering how to adjust your whole life when a part of you is missing. Its not easy and things will get better and so will you so don't be too hard on yourself it is very early days for you.
I promise you that you will never be alone on this site and we will be with you every step of the way and support you as much as we can.
Meanwhile Im sending some huge big hugs your way for now and please keep in touch with us and keep talking, it helps. xxxx
Dear
it is all very early days for you , please phone one of the Breast care nurses at your hospital , you might need to leave a voice message and they will get back to you tomorrow . They can explain any reasons for what you are seeing . I had immediate reconstruction 3 years ago and I couldn’t look at myself , I eventually did . Everything settled .
Please don’t sit alone and worry , phone either your nurses , in my hospital they work as a team and we aren’t given a particular one , but they are all lovely and understanding , you will not be bothering them , they want to help.
Late in the day now but phone and leave a message and don’t worry if you sob your phone call , just make sure you leave your phone number clearly.
big hugs
Ruby Rose
Hi MT1962, it is totally understandable what you are going through and you are not alone. I experienced the same thing as you. I expected a nice neat, flat scar but instead have a sunken scar, it almost looks like a crater and I also have a dogs ear under my arm. I had my mastectomy on 23rd November 2020. I had in my head what it will look like and it’s nothing like it. Do you have a treatment plan going forward? Do you have a partner, children? It’s hard to see it now but it will get better. I focused on treatment first knowing that I can deal with my breast issues at a later date but I’ve got used to it. We all have to give ourselves time to adjust and it is still very new to you. Breath and try to take your mind off it. Give you self a chance to relax and heal and if you need to cry then let it out!!! Sorry I probably haven’t helped much but I just wanted you know you’re not alone in your thoughts and it does get better. Feel free to read my profile.
Remember to take care of yourself
Janine x
As the others have said, it's early days as yet and the tissue, where the surgery has been, will still be swollen. As time goes by, the swelling will go down. I don't know what happens to the 'dog ears' but I'm sure there will be something that can help, although, as swelling goes down, they may well settle down considerably
WIshing you well
