Hi.

I have been diagnosed with 8cm DCIS, and have to get a mastectomy followed by reconstruction.

I am lucky with timing in the fact that, after getting diagnosed privately, my NHS hospital has just started doing DIEP reconstructions, after stopping them through COVID.

Hoping to get my op within the next month or so and just wondered if anyone had any advice for me or would be willing to share their experiences with me?

Look forward to hearing from some of you that are or were in a similar situation to me!

Elaine. xx

    • Hi there. I had SMX with immediate DIEP at end of January this year. It seems a huge operation and it is but luckily we are asleep Joy. I won’t lie the first 24/48 hrs are tough but my advice is take all pain relief offered and don’t be afraid to ask for more. Once drains are out you will feel a lot more comfortable and hopefully be able to go home.
I found a v shaped pillow a godsend as you have to sleep on your back for 6 weeks. Lots of pillows to prop you up and put under your knees.
    •  I was walking pretty upright by the end of the second week but don’t rush it we are all different. Take your time and be kind to yourself.
It really does get better, start massaging as soon as wounds are healed it really helps with swelling. And don’t judge your new boob for at least 8weeks. I couldn’t bear the look of mine before thatJoyut now it’s fantastic! Can’t wait to get the other one made smaller to match Joy

    Hi there.

Thanks for getting back to me and for the great advice. Do you feel like you are back to some sense of normality again now?

How long did it take to feel like the wounds were healed enough to start massaging?

Glad you managed to keep your sense of humour - I think that’s exactly what will get me through it all too!

The Facebook group that you recommended - is it DIEPCJourney - Breast reconstruction after mastectomy? I will try to join that I think. Good to be in touch with people why really know what you are going through.

Have you any advice as to what bras I should buy?  Or pj’s/ nighties for the hospital?

Thanks again for getting in touch. Can’t wait til I’m at the stage you’re at!!

    Sending big virtual hugs. xx
