Hi all,

I am a nurse and have 2 children (6 and 9y old). I have been diagnosed last February.

One day, I was putting some body cream on me and  felt a lump on my left breast.

Thank you for the £2 cream I bought from Aldi. I stopped to put body cream for a while but I just wanted to tried my new body cream.

After the finding of my lump, I started to worry and decided to call my GP 2 days later. The doctor immediately referred me to the breast clinic but not knowing when I will be call was unbearable so I decided to go private. The clinic did a mammographie then acted quickly and did an ultrasound with biopsy.

A few days after, I got the results with no surprised ; stage 1, grade 3 tumor but further investigations showed 2 tumble at 5 cm apart.

£2000 out of pocket because I did the diagnostic in private, I decided to go to NHS. They did more biopsy, nodes are normal.

For the consultant, best is to have a mastectomy because the 2 tumor are "far " away then she wants to put an implant. I asked her why she doesn't want to do an MRI and she told me that they won't do for the type of my tumor. She don't even know if I have some metastasis !

Not happy with her proposition, I went to France as I still have my social security and book an appointment with the oncologist and surgeon to have a second opinion. I had an MRI and a PET Scan. Both exams reveals the location of the tumors but interesting to know that the tumors are far away from the PAM (aureola) and that I may not have to remove all the breast as the location is in the side. I also saw the plastic surgeon who can perform the reconstruction, first with a temporary implant and second with the DIEP technic which is not available at the NHS because of the cost. Not having a lot of fat, he will take fat where he can then fill the breast with through the aerial.

I have an appointment this week with the consultant in UK to tell her about my decision and I am afraid about what she will say.

So I have breast cancer, stage 1, 2 tumors, HER positive, K67 10%

I don't know who told you DIEP is not available on the NHS as several women I have spoken to on the forums have had that done.  It may be that your Trust are not doing it but it is available.  A woman I speak to at radiotherapy had DIEP done at the time of her operation on the NHS.

Thank you for your help. I asked the consultant and she said yes. Unfortunately, I went  to another place because the consultant wanted to do a mastectomy so remove the entire breast with the PAM. If she had done an MRI or SCANN, she will had see that the tumor was in the side! So I had my surgery done with an expanser which I need to keep in case of radiotherapy. For the chemo, an ONCOTYPE DX has been done so will see if I have chemotherapy but I don't think so.
