Cover up Hickman
Good morning
my mum has had a Hickman Line inserted.
she is vey anxious about catching it and pulling it out and so not sleeping at all well.
can anyone recommend a way to cover it so it feels secure?
Hi Larajane welcome to the forum. Im thinking that this may have been inserted to deliver drugs/treatment?
Is there any way that you can phone the unit where your mum had this inserted and ask if they have any ideas? I imagine that some type of dressing may be enough if it could secure the line and stop it catching but the unit treating your mum are the best people to ask about this.
Hi
Another warm welcome to the community from me. My unit used to put a dressing on my hickman line and give me spares to take home. Sorry that your mum is feeling anxious and that's understandable. The line actually goes quite a way inside so isn't as easy to pull out as a Picc line, but that isn't going to ease your mum's anxiety right now. If you have anything like a lint dressing and micropore tape, you could try covering it with that for now. The tubes will always hang down - you can tape them down, or just stick them into a sleep bra? Maybe tomorrow call the unit and explain your mum's anxiety and see if they can give you some dressings or suggest ones to buy. It's a little weird having a Hickman, for sure but your mum will get more confident with it in time.
For now, sending hugs and hoping your mum gets some good sleep!
