Hello! I’m new here and very scared. I’m 56 and have no diagnosis yet. I found a semi-hard irregular lump in my right breast. It’s not moveable, it’s painless and it’s about 2cm in size, approximately.
I have to go for breast screen at the hospital , this Friday. I have been waiting what seems like an eternity, nearly 2 weeks for the appointment! Not knowing whether it’s cancer or not, is hard! I’m sure so many of you have already been in this place!
I have Googled the numbers on my referral letter, 4A,4B,4C,4D- cancer suspected. It seems this means I will need to have a biopsy.
I don’t know whether I will possibly find out on Friday (day of screening) if I have cancer, or any information, or whether I will have to wait for the biopsy results and how long that might be?
I would be interested to know other people’s experiences?
Many thanks
Sending virtual hugs xx
Hi Gingerbreadgirl, sorry you are going through this but at least you’ve found this site which is wonderfully supportive.
First can I suggest that you don’t google for information as it’s not always correct and often out of date.
Waiting is the hardest part of this process and the best thing to do is to try and keep busy and distracted and remember that a lot of lumps and biopsies turn out to be nothing. If it does turn out to be cancer then keep in mind that breast cancer is very treatable these days with a very high success rate.
If you do have a biopsy then unfortunately there will be more waiting for results as you don’t get them there and then. Once biopsy results come back and if it is cancer (and it may not be) then you will be given your treatment plan.
Really hope your appointment goes well and that if you do have a biopsy that results come back that it’s not cancer.
Wishing you all the best x
Godwilling thank you for your supportive response. I will try to keep busy!
I hope you are doing well.
Thanks again Xx
When you see your consultant on the day they will sometimes give you an indication of what they think it may be. Biopsies are not usually sent to America unless they want to do Oncotype testing (https://www.breastcancer.org/symptoms/testing/types/oncotype_dx). You should get your results in about 2 weeks. I had to wait 6 weeks for my appointment although I was referred under the 2 week wait rule. Although my consultant didn't say it was cancer he said "there is something there but we can deal with it".
Hi
we’ve all probably been exactly where you are and it is very hard waiting and not knowing!
I was referred under the two week rule and was luckily seen in 8 days ( this was in June 2020 too). I had a mammogram, ultrasound and biopsy ( and a clip inserted). I was told then that there was a 50/50 chance of it being cancer and got the biopsy results two weeks later.
Thank you Lesley63 that’s really helpful. I hope you are doing okay. Take care xx
I’m doing very well thank you. I finished active treatment in November (my profile will tell you what I had) and now take Letrozole for the next few years with monthly Goserelin implants and six monthly bisphosphonate infusions
I know my lump was sent off to America for Oncotype testing but only because it cam back as grade 3- that was done post- lumpectomy and my oncology treatment plan was discussed and decided once those results were back
Best of luck for Friday x
Thanks Vesuvius, that’s very helpful. I wish you a speedy recovery and hope you will soon be restored to good health.
Take care.xx
