Hello, I'm post surgery (single mastectomy no reconstruction) and have completed chemo and radio. I exercised a fair bit pre diagnosis but didn't manage much beyond walking during chemo. I want to start running again. Can anyone recommend a sports bra? I don't really want to wear a prosthesis so need a bra that will support one side- or do they all do that? Thanks

  • Hi

I used shock absorbers but that's only as I already had them, I didn't buy any new sports bra's post mx and just used a softie when I could be bothered and it was fine for me not to do so...it took forever for me to get my prosthesis (received 1 week before reconstruction!!).

Hi and thanks for replying. I hadn't even thought to just use previous sports bras- makes total  sense! I'll give that a go when I go out later in the week.

    thanks, Wendy

  • Hello and hope you don’t mind me reviving this thread. It seemed more efficient than starting a new one.I have had mastectomy with implant’May 2021, chemo then RT which ended 11th March. I’ve gone braless but put my old running bra on again during the week and I now have sunburnt type skin where the elastic touched me. I have very sensitive skin (had to stop paclitaxel early as a result of skin reaction) and did better than anyone thought during RT.

im thinking of running bra less this week but also wondering about how ongoing sensitivity is going to affect my efforts to get back to my no 1 sanity maintaining activity. 34a/b. Always used Sweaty Betty pricey but indestructible running bras.

  • Hi , I’m not a runner but use a sports bra for exercise classes and Nordic walking. Re skin sensitivity, I’d say you’re quite early on from the effects of the radiotherapy - I had red skin under my breast for a good while after so only wore my post op Royce bras, which were soft, until about 12 weeks post rads. At this point I had developed lympheodema in the breast and the specialist nurse told me that I needed proper supportive bras so I ditched the nice soft ones! I got fitted for decent bras at M and S, and got a sports bra for starting the Nordic walking. By this time the post rads skin issues were mostly resolved and the new bras didn’t aggravate the underneath bit, thankfully.
Sorry for the ramble! Basically I’d just say give it a bit more time for the skin to heal, the after effects certainly went on a lot longer than a few weeks for me. Love and hugs, HFxx

  • Thank you so much. I’ve suddenly become inpatient. I think the anniversary on Thursday of  being confirmed I had breast cancer has hit some ‘Move on’ button xx

  • Nowt wrong with being impatient. I say go for it bra-less and see how you get on...really important to have your coping mechanisms I find, and be glad you don't have bigger boobs!! No bra not an option in my case...there would be danger to both me and passer-bys Laughing

  • I'd definitely recommend going free range,,,lol. Less rubbing & irritation. I also had sunburn type skin & then Lymphodema, now daily physio, but manageable, I finished my RT on the 22nd Dec, was alot easier to hide my boobs under loose jumpers/tops, not so easy in the summer. Relaxed
