i received my diagnosis for breast cancer last December and had the tumour (10mm) removed the beginning of January. I was lucky as it was small and the lymph nodes were clear of cancer. I now have a dilemma as the oncologist consultant has told me that radiotherapy is optional, I have started pills already. Has anyone else been in this situation? I don’t know what to do.
Hi , don’t think I’ve seen your name before so a very warm welcome to the forum.
I sort of had your dilemma as I was told by the oncologist that I could just ‘leave it there’ after lumpectomy and SNB. My beast was a bit bigger than yours (13mm) but still classed as small and like you the 2 nodes removed were clear. But he then went on to say that rads and hormone therapy would reduce the chance of recurrence so I didn’t hesitate to go for both. I did ask whether mastectomy was an option but he said that would be regarded as over treatment. And he also said that lumpectomy plus rads gives same statistical odds as mastectomy. It wasn’t really a dilemma for me as I felt I wanted every chance to keep it away.
I’m sure there will be others who’ve been in this situation. When do you have to decide? Wishing you well and sending love and a big virtual hug, HFxx
Hi @ AEP, I was in a similar position to you in May last year . My cancer was 19mm ( including early disease) . I was told that as I had clear margins and clear sentinel node the radiotherapy could be omitted as long as I carried on taking the prescribed Letrozole for at least 5 years . However I had had a previous cancer in the other breast 22 years ago ( unrelated) for which I had had 25 sessions of RT. When he quoted the statistics to me I too felt that I should have a further course of RT as it had served me well in the past. Hope this makes sense to you - sorry to ramble ! Consequently I went ahead and had “5 day fast forward “ which was a complete doddle in comparison to the previous 25 . But we are all different and what suits one person does not suit another . Our cancers were unique to us and so is our treatment. Have you spoken to your BCN about this - she will hopefully be able to talk it through with you and thus help you to come to the right decision for you .I am positive I made the right decision for myself and have no regrets whatsoever. Wishing you well either way xx Kwissy
Thanks for responding, I have to make my mind up very soon. This is my first time of cancer, so hence the shell shock state at the moment.
Xx
