Radiotherapy for breast cancer

Hi,

I have had surgery and chemotherapy for breast cancer. I'm now due for a CT scan on Friday, then to have Radiotherapy on my right breast. Any tips out there for managing treatment or side effects from radiotherapy? I'm not sure what to expect!

  • In terms of side effects I recommend moisturising lots to protect the area. The nurses told me twice a day was enough but I applied cream 4 to 5 times a day and I think this helped manage the side effects. I used the E45 Cream (not lotion) which was really good. I did get some spots and redness to the area and this peaked about 10 days after treatment. Good luck

  • I agree, lots of moisturiser. The hospital provided the creams for me ( might just be Scotland) and advised when to use. I used them very ‘generously’ Also drink lots of water. Take water with you for before and after each session. I really had no side effects other than some skin colouring but no pain. The sessions are quite quick if running on time. Good luck.

  • Maintain that shoulder movement even long after treatment finishes, and yes, moisturise and drink plenty of water. I used Aveeno and lathered it on as soon as I was vertical and about to get dressed, plus again at night. Oh, and if you feel uncomfortable, go bra-less. I had treatment in the summer so once home I could strip off ( cream again!) and wear a floppy baggy tee shirt.

Be prepared for some tiredness, usually after treatment finishes, and you’ll be fine, I’m sure, you’ve already been through worse!

  • I had 5days of radiotherapy 6 weeks ago and other than some tiredness after the treatment I didn’t have any problems. I did use moisturiser and found that the experience was one of the better things that we have to do. It’s very quick once they have you in the correct position.  In my experience the chemo seemed to give me a few more side effects.  I sure that you will find that the staff in radiology are very kind and supportive with any questions you may have.

  • Thank-you for this advice.  Yes the staff seem nice. I just need to calm myself down a bit! X
