Lack of sex!

Hi - I have been on letrozole and zoladex for 3 years, 2 to go. Bit of joint pain but not too bad, but the intimate dryness is terrible - can’t have penetrative sex anymore and my last smear test was excruciating. Any recommendations?

  • Hi,

I'm on Anastrozole and vaginal dryness was a side-effect that was casually listed when I was prescribed the drug, and I didn't think any more of it. Until I realised that it meant having sex was impossible because of the pain.

I mentioned this to the GP nurse when I went for a smear test and she immediately prescribed an oestradiol pessary to take twice a week. Checked with the breast care team and they said yes, this is exactly what they would prescribe and they were supportive  Although it contains oestrogen it is a very low dose and because it is a topical treatment it has little effect on oestrogen in the body.

I also use Yes gel on the outside bits, which doesn't contain any hormones and is available from Amazon or chemists over the counter.

The important think to note is that this has been a very effective solution for me.

    Good luck with everything

  • Hi, I have Replens on prescription, it's non hormonal and helps with general dryness on a daily basis but sex remains challenging even with additional lubricant.

There are a couple of blogs/posts on this, here are some links that might help.

  • I use Vagifem twice a week just to help keep the UTIs away. GP prescribed it years ago as I used to have infections very frequently.

Breast team did say it was ok, as it is not generally absorbed.

(Mind you, being a widow and over 80 now, sex isn’t a ‘thing’ any longer)
