Talking with experts about Sex and Cancer: "All good sex starts with a conversation"

Sex, intimacy, and relationships are regular topics of conversation here on the Community. From discussions about erectile dysfunction, and hormonal and libido changes to using dilators and pumps. There’s no need to feel embarrassed when talking about sex on the Community, our forums are anonymous safe spaces for you to talk openly about your feelings and share your personal experiences with people who understand.

This blog features a video hosted by Helen Addis, joined by Macmillan Chief Medical Officer, Richard, and Sarah, a Sexual Health Nurse and Lovehoney Sexpert. Together, they explore the ways to maintain a healthy sexual relationship during and after cancer treatment.

“Recovery and going through cancer treatment doesn’t have to mean that you lose your sexiness’.

Through personal stories, professional insights, and responses to audience questions, Richard and Sarah provide valuable advice and support for anyone facing the complexities of sex and cancer. As a leading voice on cancer and sexual wellness, Macmillan is so proud to be partnering together with Lovehoney. Everyone deserves sexual happiness, and we need to be able to have open and honest conversations about the impact that a cancer diagnosis can have while offering support, ideas, and advice along the way.

What is discussed in the video?

• How to talk about sex with healthcare professionals and loved ones
• Practical advice for maintaining intimacy despite the challenges of cancer
• Tips for addressing common sexual health issues like vaginismus
• The role of sex toys and wellbeing devices in enhancing sexual wellbeing.

The video will have English subtitles and there is an option to read the transcript if you watch the video on YouTube.

Continuing the sex and cancer conversation

Sarah the Lovehoney sex expert said:

“I think it’s also amazing that we live in a digital age now, before it would be harder to find like-minded people, people going through the same journey whereas now there are so many support groups. There’s so many people in the public eye who talk about their experiences, and I think from my experience working with cancer patients, this is what really helps them get through.”

We’ve set up a sex and cancer discussion thread in our Cancer chat forum to provide a dedicated place for you to talk about your personal experiences and relationships. There have already been some honest personal experiences shared in the discussion thread. We hope that by reading and joining in the conversation, will help you feel less alone. Click here to find the discussion thread.

You are always welcome to start a new discussion about a specific topic or if you want to introduce yourself and share what has brought you to join the forum.
