I hate my wig

I got my wig today and I really dislike it. It looks thin and cheap. I asked if I could leave it and I was told no, or I would have to come back at another date. I was also sold a headband, stand, and care products to go with it. I was told I needed it all to care for and wear my wig.

I didn’t expect this to be a nice experience but I’ve left feeling terrible about it all.

  • That's rotten your feeling like this,

Why would they not let you leave it?

I haven't gone through the process yet, so I'm not sure how it works, is it through the NHS?

Can you make another appointment somewhere else? Or have you paid for it?

  • What a shame you have been left feeling upset ! I was very lucky the lady I had was very caring I got upset trying them on but left happy with just a stand . I was told to just wash it with fairy liquid and fabric conditioner !! No fancy products . I didn’t wear it much as I felt self conscious I preferred my turbans .
sending you a big hug and best wishes with the rest of your treatment x

  • Yes, it was an NHS wig. I said I didn’t like any of them and could I leave it and I was told no. The wig looks awful. I think I’m going to go wig shopping somewhere else.

  • Did you buy your stand?

  • Oh hopefully you can find something somewhere else, it's important to feel good whilst everything else is out of our control during the treatment....good luck, Pray

  • So sorry you had that experience. Daughter also hated hers - although it was actually very nice. She just hated wearing it and only did so once. She was much happier with a wardrobe of chemo beanies and scarves, mainly from Etsy, until her hair grew back enough for her to be comfortable with it.

I hope you can get something you're happy with. Sending very best wishes. x

  • Thank you. I bought some beanies yesterday and think I will probably feel more comfortable wearing them.

  • Hi Ckb8

What an awful experience. You are under no obligation to accept any wig or accessories just because they are offered to you.

I've just picked up mine. After trying several wigs at my first visit, I didn't like any of them, so the lady ordered one that was what met my requirements but she did say I didn't need to accept it. I wanted one close to my natural dark brown and long layers with a fringe at below shoulder length. I didn't like it, but she showed me one in a lighter colour, the fringe wasn't as long and the length is closer to what I wanted so I went for it.

Like many here I am more likely to go for beanies, etc, but the wig was for more meeting up with the wider family circle.

Have a word with your Macmillan nurse and see what they advise.
