Working during chemotherapy

Hello everyone,

I was diagnosed with BC, mix ductal/lobular ER/PR positive. I had my first chemo 2 weeks ago, tomorrow I’ll have second. Doctors want to shrink my lumps before the surgery. I’ve been off work for past 2 weeks, I’m a bit tired, I have brain fog etc. I think I might be able to work on part time basis. However, I worry about the possible infections.

I’m working in one of the Scottish castles, my job involves lots of walking, standing, being outside a lot, talking to people outside and in the shop, some cleaning etc.  I wonder if I should go back to work or stay away. I really can’t make my mind. I’m feeling okayish. I would appreciate any advice.

  • Hi Mirr, glad your treatment is under way. Daughter's oncologist was very much 'if you feel up to work, then do it. Just be sensible - keep well away from anyone who looks unwell'.  Being outside a lot will help.

Daughter managed to work part time for much of her treatment although needed a few days off after each chemo and sometimes at other times. She also had a couple of weeks off after each surgery. But she was very glad to be at work whenever she felt able.

I hope your treatment goes well and you are able to keep working if you decide it's right for you. x

  • Hi, glad it's going ok so far. I worked flexibly during my chemo. I would have struggled with physical work more in the first week after each treatment, but I was much stronger in the 2nd and 3rd weeks of the cycle.  I guess it also depends how flexible your employer can be on a practical basis. Best wishes
