Surgery booked before I’ve had results back

Hi all, Is it common to have surgery booked before you’ve had the results of MRI and biopsy? I’m in a bit of shock. I received a phone call today asking me to go for a pre-op tomorrow and surgery is on Tuesday in 5 days time.

I have an appointment with the consultant tomorrow to find out about my results and what treatment I might need but didn’t expect to have the operation booked first. Has this happened to anyone else?

  • Hello and so sorry you’ve had the need to join this ‘club’!

I wonder if your surgeon has a good idea what may be needed and wanted to book space in theatre plus calculating staff holidays? There are lots of considerations when deciding on the best times and dates for surgery.

hope all goes well for you, keep posting.

I will find out tomorrow, just had a shock to find out I was booked in for surgery before my consultation! Thinking about it though you are probably right…they obviously have to forward plan!

I could be just lucky considering how long waiting lists are. Will keep posting x

  • Hi Dexie61

My first surgery date was already booked and given at my results appointment. I had a MRI the following week which showed another area of concern so this was cancelled. It was rebooked after various other tests then MDT didn’t agree with my consultant so was cancelled again (I’d had the pre op and everything). After a second opinion was obtained I had surgery seven weeks after diagnosis. It was tough and the uncertainty was awful but, third time lucky! I’m sharing this just so you are prepared that even though you have a date this can change.

Best of luck with everything. x

  • Thanks Eebee,

im so glad I read your post before my appointment. Mine has been changed now to 16th August due to more tests needed. X
