Lumpectomy scheduled with seed placement and sentinel node biopsy for lymph node(s) removal

Hi

I’m worried about my surgery in about 6 days time. I am wondering how painful this will be. I’m due to have several lymph nodes removed and a mastoplexy as my invasive lobular cancer is 45 mm in size. I have at least one lymph node with cancer in too.

I’m also wondering if I’ll still be able to sleep on my side or if I’ll need to sleep on my back? I’ve a bad neck and find sleeping on my back very uncomfortable you see.

Thanks

  • Hi Kitty1972

It depends on your pain threshold the amount of pain you’ll feel after surgery. You will either be given painkillers before you go home to take if you are in pain or you will be given a prescription for painkillers should you need them.

You’ be able to sleep on your side alright  but you might find it easier to sleep on the non-operation side.

Wishing you the best of luck with the operation and subsequent results.

    Best wishes

  • Hi Daisy53; thanks for your reply. Unfortunately, I can only tolerate paracetamol, so I imagine I might be quite sore. I think I’m having a nerve block though which might help for immediate relief. The thought of a nerve block is scary though x

  • Hi Kitty1972,

I am just wondering how you are, and how your surgery went? I am 11 days post op after my lumpectomy and SLNB so have some similar questions about recovery! Take care, and hoping all is well for you xx

  • Hi kitty

hope you don’t mind me messaging you, how did you know you had a lymph node with cancer ?
just asking as I’ve just been diagnosed x

  • Hi Lavender

i have just had a second surgery 2 days ago as they missed one margin unfortunately. This has been less painful than the first surgery though, so I’m hoping I recover quicker. How are you doing? X

  • Hi Burgess

They found one lymph node on the ultrasound and biopsy. I then had a Sentinel Node biopsy in theatre, where they put a dye in for the surgeon to be guided to take out that one plus some more around it. Unfortunately, they then discovered 5/6 lymph nodes were cancerous that they took out. For some reason only 1 showed on their scans.

Are you going to have the Sentinel lymph node biopsy done?

    I hope this helps

    good luck xx

  • I had this done on friday and I sleep perfect even on my sides, only taking paracetamol, I find it is only when I move that hurts. Sounds worst than it is. Best of luck x
