Returning to work after a mastectomy

Hi,

I had single mastectomy without reconstruction 4 weeks ago tomorrow and thinking about the future and going back to work. Due to various setbacks I've been off work since January. Due to autism/delayed processing it's all just getting real (its been 11 months since I went to the GP). I work in a care home as activities coordinator it was supposed to be a job share but the other person left so just me on a 24 hours contract so worried about peoples demands and then questions on where I've been, coping with potential side effects of the tamoxifen.

Doing a phased return whenever I go back but look for tips/advice

  • Hi, I think a phased return with shorter hours makes a lot of sense and you might also think about starting back mid week, so you only have 2-3 days in week one instead of getting tired from 5 days in a row.

    Best wishes

  • Hi Supermeg90

Thank you for your post. Well done on getting through your mastectomy.

I'm not sure from your post, if you're wanting to go back to work now, or are thinking about when you might go back.

I also had a mastectomy without reconstruction 14mths ago, however I also had additional treatments. I am self-employed and I'm now working part-time, post treatment. Pre treatment, I worked full-time, and then some!

My advice would be to listen to your body and emotions. I would say take as much time as you feel you need,  as long as your circumstances will allow. You have been through and are going through a lot. Your employers are legally bound to consider your needs. I would think carefully about what you need and then discuss all with your employer, prior to agreeing a return date.

There is a good MacMillan leaflet about work and cancer, you may find it helpful.

Wishing you all the best, Shaka

  • Hi  , on my GPs advice I went back initially just on Tuesdays and Thursdays, then Monday / Wednesday/ Friday, to avoid consecutive days as I felt so tired after a day’s work. I was a special needs teacher and had a class with a lot of physical needs. Xx
