Evening all. I know there is no set pattern for how anyone responds to chemo but as a driving instructor do you think it's likely I'm going to be able to work during my treatment? I'm prepared to stop work throughout if needs be, but I'm curious to see what those who have been there, think. Am I naive to think I may be ok for 2 out of 4 weeks a month?
Hi Sarah - I haven’t worked since I started my chemo - my oncologist suggested most of his patients didn’t throughout their treatments.
My chemo has happened every 3 weeks - my first week I would be resting as I found if I was too energetic I would wear myself out - I also couldn’t concentrate so didn’t feel safe to drive. The 2nd week is when my immunity is at it’s lowest so was advised to be safe so wore a mask if I popped to the shops. My third week has been filled with appointments and the next chemo session.
As I had a picc-line fitted, I have needed to visit my hospital each week for a clean and flush - I can’t comment about what happens if you have a port instead though I think you have more freedom.
I’m nearly finished with the chemo but my last two infusions have each been delayed for a week due to my blood levels being too low so that’s changed my plans for a big family get together during Christmas.
I hope you manage to fathom out what to do work wise.
Best wishes, Joules
