Both my surgeon before my mammoplasty and oncologist before radiotherapy told me my affected breast would end up smaller (two small lumps removed) but it has been 7 months since surgery and 3 months since radiotherapy and it actually seems larger…?! Anyone else experienced this? X
Hi JulesD , yes I noticed that my treated breast (lumpectomy/ wide local excision, followed by 3 weeks of radiotherapy) was bigger than the other. It had been the slightly smaller one, pre surgery. I asked about this at my oncology follow up appointment, 10 weeks after radiotherapy. They agreed and also thought it felt warm, so gave me a course of antibiotics in case there was an underlying infection. They also referred me to the lympheodema service. The lympheodema nurse confirmed that it was mild lympheodema. She showed me simple massage, recommended more supportive bras and also that I take up Nordic walking or aqua aerobics. I chose the walking, did a course, and am still doing it 4 and a half years later! When I saw the nurse 8 weeks later she said it had improved and to keep up the Nordic walking. I had also been to M and S to be fitted for better bras with proper support.
Sorry for long ramble, yours may not be lymphoedema but worth asking for a referral to check it out. It’s a less well known possible side effect of breast radiotherapy. Love and hugs, HFxx
Thankyou. Will call and speak to breast care nurse about it. Just didn’t want to waste their time so thought I’d ask here first. X
Definitely good to get it checked as lympheodema can make you more prone to skin infections. I’ve had one ‘flare up’ since it was diagnosed, about a year after surgery. I got a quick GP appointment (this was pre Covid) and got a course of antibiotics which sorted it out. And I have continued with all the moisturising which I’d started during radiotherapy, to keep the skin supple. Xx
