Hello, I had invasive breast cancer (12cm tumour and 16 of 19 lymphs cancerous) Ct and bone scans were all clear.

my oncologist decided that it would be best to wait until after my chemo and radiotherapy before starting the process to shut down my ovaries. I felt happy with this plan but now I’m 9 weeks post chemo I feel very paranoid and fearful that I have left the process late on and I’m increasing my chances of reoccurrence. I’m loosing sleep and very anxious about it all and wanted to know if anyone else waited until after their treatment before commencing with the ovaries shut down? my periods have stopped naturally on my 4th cycle of chemo but very worried I should of made myself start the hormone treatment during chemo instead of putting it off. Many thanks x

  • theyare nit starting me on pills until after my radiotherapy too, i finished chemo last week so it wont be until january sometime. i am in no rush to take them tbh

i would try not to panic hugs

  • Hi thanks for messaging. Have you started on the injections? I haven’t started anything yet. I’m sure if there was any risk my oncologist would have told me. I think I’m probably attaching my anxiety into it that’s all. But hearing people in similar situation really helps :) xx

  • i am currently aching like mad and doing the gastrofil injections, i think if there was a higher risk they would have started you early, my MIL was started beforeher surgery but her tumour was quite larg, but she also ignored her lump for quite some time i think it was out of precaution.

we have to try not to panic, and i know it is easy to say even as another person going through it, but panic sets up stress amd stress is bad for you. try to do some breathing to calm yourself when you start stressing, i do stretches and try to take this as it comes. hugs

sorry edited as i have chemo brain, 9 weeks post, and radio?

call your dr, but try not to stress, im only 5 days post

  • Thanks, yes I’m a week and half from finishing radiotherapy. Appointment next week to see oncologist and move forward with the zoladex injections I’m guessing? To get the ovaries shut down. I think that’s why I’m panicking slightly as I had a large tumour and high lymph involvement. But again I’m sure the oncologist would have let me know?! The stress I’m creating is probably doing me more harm than the hormones. Definitely need to address that, thanks xx

  • Hi Lizzie, I’ve just seen my oncologist and asked him the same question.

He said they start injections after chemo, you can start them before radio (after chemo) but the injections may have side effects and they want you to recover (so he prefers to start after radio).

Remember the positives in your diagnosis- your CT scan is clear and chemo will have mopped up any pesky cells. You’ll have hormone therapy and then ovarian shut down on top of all of that. That really is a belt and braces treatment plan! Well done for getting through all of that

PS if you want a positive story - my sister had high lymph node involvement - pretty much all of hers were affected, and she is 9 years from diagnosis tomorrow

  • Hi there, thank you so much for messaging!! It’s so reassuring to find other people also waiting until after radiotherapy as so many seem to start during chemo. But my oncologist was the same and she says she wants me well for the whole ovaries process like you. The mind is so powerful at making you doubt yourself though isn’t it. I’ll be starting a mindfulness course in jan (much needed I think).

Thank you again and so great to hear about your sister :D xxx
