Breast tissue thickening a year after treatment for Triple Negative

Hi

I guess I'm here for someone to tell me I'm being a silly :(  I would appreciate it if anyone that's had the same would just let me know how they got on.

I finished treatment for TNBC last July. I had 2 lumpectomys to get clear margins and 4 lymph nodes removed with 1 having detected cancer. I had chemotherapy after surgery followed by radiotherapy. I was told I was all clear and I would have mammograms yearly. My last one in January was all clear.

My scar has always been very neat and no issues however the last 2 weeks I've noticed thickening of the breast tissue about an inch away from the scarred area. Can anyone tell me if this is normal for the breast tissue to thicken more than a year after surgery or maybe I'm rightly concerned and should get it checked?

I don't want to go wasting anyone's time if I am just being over dramatic. I think knowing the recurrence rate with TNBC maybe plays on my mind too much so I need a kick up the rear end and to be told to stop worrying :-/

Thank you in advance x

  • Hi Mummabear81

Welcome to the forum and I am sorry to hear that you were diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer last year.  While it probably isn't anything to worry about it's better to get it checked out anyway.  Give your breast care nurse a ring and ask them about the thickening of breast tissue and they should be able to tell you whether it's anything to worry about.  You're certainly not wasting their time, it's what they're there for.

Best of luck and best wishes

  • Hi Daisy53

Thank you so much for your reply. The issue I have is that I have moved since treatment finished to a different county so I think I would have to go through the whole GP referral procedure again though I may be wrong.

I will call my GP and try to get some answers as to how I go about getting it checked.

I am very greatful you took the time to reply.

    Best wishes to you

  • Hi  , I have self referred a few times in between annual mammograms, since my diagnosis. My understanding is that you can do this during the 5 years following treatment, though of course it may vary from area to area. Have you changed hospitals since moving? I realise that’s a potential complication but in your position I would want it checked. I do have thickened tissue near my scar, in fact I find it quite hard to know what’s ‘normal’ for it now! So as well as my annual mammograms I still ask for an actual examination as although it’s quite painful being poked and prodded, it’s very reassuring being told that all seems fine. I’ve had a couple of ultrasounds also to check things, once when I had some nipple discharge on the treated side (nothing detected), and recently when I found what felt like a small lump on the other side. Thankfully after a thorough ultrasound it was declared all ok!
I hate asking for investigations but override my feeling of being a nuisance because I want to be vigilant. So please do follow it up for your own peace of mind. Love and hugs, HFxx
