Bra discomfort after mastectomy

Hi,

I had a right mastectomy and full node clearance 4 weeks ago.  When I try to wear a bra (just a soft cotton bralette) it feels very uncomfortable.  Causes pain across chest and on the side of my trunk below my armpit.  I know that it is still very early days, but I was just wondering if anyone had experience of this eatly on and then it improved for them with time? I am only fairly small breasted but it would be nice to wear a bra to give some support to the remaining side, and I feel more comfortable with how the remaining breast looks in clothes with one on. I have an appointment next week about getting fitted for prosthesis and they said to take a bra I like.  I can't even manage a stretchy bralette atm.so have no idea what to take! Any advice very welcome!

  • Hi - I had a left mastectomy and nodes taken out. I experienced the same thing and opted for a sports bra with the racer back. I have found this very comfortable. It is early days yet after your op, but you will get use to wearing a bra again without the pain.

    thank you

  • Hello, the most comfy one I have is the sloggi bra. Very light weight. I once wore a bra that gave me pain around my scare scar tissue as it was a bit tight.   (mastectomy on 2nd Feb and SLND) I still couldn't wear anything that was too well fitted under my arm as it's still sensitive. I plan to get some more of the sloggi bra's. Though there a bit pricey. Xx

  • Hello,

Thanks Tis and Big Foot for your replies.  I will give your suggestions a try :). It is still early days so hoping for less pain as time goes on.  I have seen those slogging ones they do look really nice.  Worth the price for some comfort I guess!

  • Yes , l had it terrible , i couldn’t wear a bra at all, luckily enough I’m am retired and I just wore a cardigan to hide my flat sided chest , I am now seven weeks on just been fitted with my prosthetic and finally it’s better not so sore .  I did go to marks and Spenser and purchased a bra but also took one of my bras I always wore before my operation the breast nurse went for my bra not the marks and Spencer’s bra. I also purchased from John Lewis it’s a ANYDAY BRA by John Lewis they are lovely and soft my prosthetic fits in the pockets so l am wearing them most days . They are good for support because I am big busted so needed a good support bra.  I am sill a bit sore at night but definitely getting better
(I had mastectomy with full nymph node removal)

also Marks and Spencer’s bralettes are comfortable pack of 3 for £20

  • Hi,

Thanks for your reply JaneyM1.  Glad to hear that it's getting less sore for you.  Also thanks for.advice about bras for the prosthesis.  You mention the Mark's and spencers bralette, so do you find bralette's are suitable for a prosthetic? I didn't know whether I could take that to my appointment or whether it had to be a proper bra.  Is it breast forms to go in a pocketed bra they give you or s prosthetic form that goes against your body that any bra can go on top of? Sorry for all the questions'!

  • I am big busted 34f so my prosthesis is now good for marks and spencer bralettes but I purchased a marks and Spencer’s softies prosthesis which I do like to wear with the bralettes in the evening find it comfortable.  The hospital prosthesis fitted much better in my bra I wore before mastectomy which was a full cup bra (triumph dorren) I have always had to buy good support bras with my breast being so big needed the support. I did buy a marks and Spencer bra for a prosthetic but waste of money the nurse went for the triump bra.  Take a few of your bras you wore before , when l went for the fitting the breast nurse just went by my size of bra I always wore and in all fairness she did spend plenty of time with me but we tried it with the marks and Spencer’s prosthetic bra and then I put my original triumph bra on and the prosthetic sits in fine without a pocket. She did say you can go to NICOLA JAMES they supply bras for mastectomy and they sell pockets you can stitch into your bras .

It’s been trial and error with me I got more bras than I ever had , the most comfortable I am wearing at the moment  with my prosthesis in ,is my John Lewis every day bra but I think it might be best just to take a bra that you always wore with support and then when you get your prosthesis from the hospital then go trying on bras to fit the prosthesis.

feel free to ask anything it’s all new to us and if I can help I will
